Inspiration
Progress in International Reading Literacy Study’s results showed 78% of 4th grade students in South Africa learn without comprehension of what they are reading, i.e. do not understand the text. The study, “Efficient Learning for the Poor: New Insights into Literacy Acquisition for Children” learning languages early is important - but lack of resources do not allow for this.
What it does
APPlicate teaches kids how to read and communicate English from French without extra “sprinkles”. The kids learn how to say things that are applicable to them. It uses methods of repetition, and directions communicated through images and text to speech. The application is built in a creative way so that easy quantifiable results are present for the kids so they are more motivated to continue learning and even teaching others. As they learn more and gain more insight, they are more eager to come back knowing the learning pace is faster.
APPlicate's main goal is to teach kids all the day to day English terms to lay the basic foundation of communication if they do not have access to education or have not started schooling yet. With APPlicate, they are ready to speak in the real world and have their voices heard. It makes further education easier for them once they have the confidence and ability to do so.
How I built it
I used block coding on Thunkable to build my application. I used functions, variables, etc to cover the various use cases and combinations present in APPlicate.
Challenges I ran into
It was hard to develop a function to have compatibility across all the screens and had to make my code efficient. I overcame this challenge by creating different sets of variables and using user inputs as stored definitions.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Developing a successful running application with 40+ day to day words that are relevant in daily life. These words apply to the lives of the target audience that are children (e.g. in the fruits section I have provided fruits that are most popular in Africa, like a pineapple).
What I learned
I learned how to write a procedure, how to build a full functioning application, and through my research how important results and motivation are in learning how to read and write.
What's next for APPlicate
I hope to expand this app by adding more words and more sensing technology for better interaction with the user.
