Inspiration

An apple a day keeps the doctor away. You are what you eat. Unfortunately, many people don't know what is actually in their food (or what their food actually is), and don't eat an apple a day. You are a picture (snapshot) away from knowing what your food is and what is in it. We hope with this app, we can promote #ConciousConsumption. You can translate your food for your health benefit.

What it does

The app utilizes Google Cloud Vision API to retrieve the food identity and lists out what it is and its nutritional content such as Calories, carbohydrates, fats and proteins.

How we built it

We used Android Studio as an IDE to do the main functions of the app such as connecting to the google cloud vision Image Content Analysis, using the built-in camera from the phone device and displaying the nutritional information of the food. We also linked the app to Firebase so that we can retrieve nutritional contents of the food.

Challenges we ran into

It was our first time implementing APIs such as google cloud platform, Android Studio, and Firebase. We had trouble implementing the Firebase database with the API Google Cloud Platform and the Android Studio. We also had trouble connecting Firebase to our app because it raised authentication issues. We were also not able to get access to a Free Nutrition API.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were able to overcome the challenges (aforementioned many firsts, including our first ever Hackathon) with great teamwork and help from the awesome mentors present.

What we learned

We learned to never give up, work as a team, usefulness of Stack Overflow and how awesome HackDavis is!

What's next for appletite

1) Implement Nutrition API, and other APIs that can complement our app better 2) Front-end Design 3) Incorporating other features such as scanning barcodes, and other supports
