Inspiration

We noticed that many people struggle to stay informed in a world of polarized news. Reading multiple articles, fact-checking, and comparing sources takes time most don’t have. We wanted a way to make trustworthy news accessible, concise, and easy to understand, especially for audiences who prefer video and audio formats.

What it does

Apollo News aggregates reporting from left-, right-, and center-leaning sources, identifies factual overlap and disagreements, and consolidates it into a balanced summary. The platform then turns this summary into short, structured videos with visuals and audio, allowing users to quickly grasp the facts and understand how different sources frame events.

How we built it

  • Pulled news articles using a News API from diverse sources.
  • Assessed source bias and polarization using a reproducible framework.
  • Consolidated factual information while highlighting disagreements.
  • Generated concise summaries using a scripted agent.
  • Leveraged video generation tools to produce short, story-driven videos with visualizations and audio narration.

Challenges we ran into

  • Identifying reliable sources and mapping their political bias.
  • Designing a reproducible method to determine factual consensus versus opinion.
  • Generating concise, coherent video scripts from varied text sources.
  • Integrating video generation with dynamic, accurate visualizations.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Successfully built a workflow that consolidates polarized news into a single, digestible story.
  • Produced video-first news content that is accessible for users who don’t have time to read.
  • Created a transparent system that highlights both consensus and disagreement in reporting.

What we learned

  • Fact-checking and consolidation require careful design to avoid inadvertently favoring one perspective.
  • Video and audio formats can dramatically increase accessibility and engagement.
  • Automating story generation from multiple sources presents both technical and editorial challenges.

What's next for Apollo News

  • Expand source coverage and refine bias assessment.
  • Improve video quality, visualizations, and narration for clarity and engagement.
  • Incorporate real-time updates and interactive elements to make news consumption more dynamic.
  • Explore personalized summaries while maintaining nonpartisan integrity.
