Inspiration

Apo AI was inspired by Stefano Selorio’s experience as a caregiver for his grandmother, who had Alzheimer’s. Witnessing firsthand the digital barriers that older adults face, especially in accessing healthcare services like telehealth, patient portals, and online safety tools, he saw an urgent need for a simple, intuitive, and empathetic solution. Recognizing the power of AI and natural language processing, he envisioned Apo AI as a personalized digital coach to help older adults navigate technology with confidence and improve health literacy.

What It Does

Apo AI is an AI-powered, text-based chatbot designed to provide personalized, on-demand digital health literacy support for older adults. It helps users: ✅ Navigate patient portals for medical records, appointments, and prescriptions ✅ Access telehealth services without confusion ✅ Protect themselves from scams and online fraud ✅ Improve tech skills like writing emails, ordering food, and using video calls ✅ Receive AI-driven coaching in over 50 languages, making it accessible to diverse communities

By providing real-time, empathetic support, Apo AI empowers seniors to take control of their health, reduces caregiver stress, and promotes digital equity in healthcare.

How We Built It

We developed Apo AI using: 🔹 AI-powered natural language processing (NLP) to understand and respond empathetically 🔹 SMS-based technology for easy accessibility (no apps or downloads required) 🔹 Multilingual AI capabilities to reach diverse populations 🔹 Data insights & analytics to track engagement and improve effectiveness 🔹 User feedback loops from pilot programs with senior centers, community organizations, and healthcare providers

The backend includes machine learning algorithms that adapt responses based on user needs, ensuring a personalized experience.

Challenges We Ran Into

🚧 Trust & Adoption: Older adults often struggle with trusting AI tools and are hesitant to adopt new technology. We solved this by ensuring Apo AI’s tone is warm, conversational, and patient. 🚧 Accessibility & Usability: Some seniors do not use smartphones or computers. To counter this, we made Apo AI available via text messages (SMS) so they don’t need to download an app. 🚧 Funding & Scaling: Securing partnerships and funding to scale Apo AI’s reach required strategic collaborations with healthcare providers, community organizations, and Medicare Advantage programs. 🚧 Data Privacy & Compliance: Since we handle digital health literacy information, we ensured Apo AI is HIPAA-compliant and follows GDPR standards for privacy and security.

What We Learned
