Inspiration
In India, accessing medicines and understanding prescriptions can be challenging, especially for elderly patients, people with limited medical knowledge, and individuals who face language barriers. Many patients struggle to read handwritten prescriptions, remember medicine refills, check medicine availability, and receive timely pharmaceutical assistance.
We wanted to solve these everyday healthcare challenges using Artificial Intelligence.
This inspired us to develop Apna Pharmacist – An AI-Powered Digital Pharmacy Platform, designed to make pharmacy services smarter, more accessible, and more convenient.
Our vision is to create a digital pharmacy assistant that simplifies medicine ordering, improves medication accessibility, and connects traditional pharmacy services with modern AI technology.
What it does
Apna Pharmacist is an AI-powered digital pharmacy platform that combines prescription recognition, intelligent medicine assistance, automated ordering, inventory management, and multilingual communication into a unified system.
Key Features
1. AI-Powered Prescription Scanner
Users can upload an image of their medical prescription. The system uses Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to extract text and identify potential medicine names, reducing the need to enter medicines manually. Recognized medicines can be reviewed and added to the shopping cart.
2. Multilingual AI Pharmacy Assistant
An AI-powered chatbot assists users with medicine-related queries and navigating pharmacy services. It supports communication in English, Hindi, and Marathi, making the platform more accessible to different users.
3. Voice-Based Assistance
Users can interact with the pharmacy assistant using voice-enabled features, making the platform easier to use for elderly people and users who prefer speaking instead of typing.
4. Smart Medicine Ordering
The platform provides a digital medicine ordering workflow, allowing users to search for medicines, manage their cart, place orders, and track order status.
5. Intelligent Refill Prediction
The system is designed to estimate when users may need their next medicine refill based on available medication and order information, helping them avoid interruptions in their routine.
6. Pharmacy Inventory Management
An administrative dashboard allows pharmacy staff to manage medicine inventory, monitor stock availability, handle orders, and access important business information.
7. Real-Time Order Management
The platform includes real-time order-management capabilities, helping pharmacy administrators monitor incoming orders and update their progress efficiently.
8. Analytics Dashboard
The pharmacy dashboard provides key performance indicators and useful insights related to orders, inventory, and pharmacy operations.
How we built it
We developed Apna Pharmacist using a modern full-stack architecture integrated with AI-powered services.
Frontend:
- Next.js and React for a responsive web application.
- Interactive user interfaces for customers and pharmacy administrators.
Backend:
- Node.js for backend services and real-time administrative functionality.
- FastAPI (Python) for AI processing and prescription-related services.
Artificial Intelligence:
- Tesseract OCR for extracting text from prescription images.
- Groq-powered Large Language Models (LLMs) for conversational pharmacy assistance.
- AI-assisted prescription interpretation and medicine identification.
- Refill prediction logic for proactive medicine management.
Database:
- Supabase for storing and managing application data.
System Integration:
The frontend communicates with backend APIs to process prescription uploads, manage medicine information, handle orders, and provide AI-powered assistance.
We designed the system with separate components for the customer experience, pharmacy administration, and AI services to support future scalability.
Challenges we ran into
1. Understanding Handwritten Prescriptions
Medical prescriptions often contain unclear handwriting, abbreviations, and inconsistent formats. Extracting accurate medicine information using OCR was one of the major technical challenges.
2. Integrating Multiple Technologies
Combining Next.js, Node.js, Python FastAPI, OCR, LLM services, and Supabase required careful API design and coordination between different services.
3. Multilingual Communication
Creating a pharmacy assistant that could respond meaningfully in English, Hindi, and Marathi presented challenges involving language understanding and medical terminology.
4. Maintaining Medicine Data Accuracy
Medicine names can be similar, and incorrect identification could create safety risks. Designing workflows that allow users to verify extracted information was an important consideration.
5. Synchronizing Orders and Inventory
Coordinating customer orders with pharmacy stock information and administrative updates required consistent data management.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Developed an integrated AI-powered digital pharmacy platform.
- Combined prescription scanning with a medicine-ordering workflow.
- Integrated multilingual AI assistance to improve accessibility.
- Built customer-facing and pharmacy-administration functionality.
- Incorporated voice interaction and intelligent refill-management features.
- Connected multiple technologies into a unified pharmacy ecosystem.
- Designed a solution addressing practical healthcare accessibility challenges.
Our biggest accomplishment is bringing several useful pharmacy services together into one platform rather than treating prescription reading, medicine ordering, and pharmacy management as separate problems.
What we learned
Developing Apna Pharmacist helped us gain practical experience in:
- Building full-stack applications using Next.js, React, and Node.js.
- Developing Python-based AI services using FastAPI.
- Working with Optical Character Recognition and prescription text extraction.
- Integrating Large Language Models into real-world applications.
- Designing multilingual and voice-enabled user experiences.
- Managing application data using Supabase.
- Connecting frontend, backend, and AI services through APIs.
- Understanding the importance of reliability, privacy, and human verification in healthcare-related software.
Most importantly, we learned that AI becomes more valuable when it is used to solve practical problems and improve accessibility for everyday users.
What's next for Apna Pharmacist
We plan to extend Apna Pharmacist with several advanced capabilities:
1. AI Medicine Interaction Alerts
Introduce safety checks that can identify potential interactions between medicines and encourage pharmacist verification.
2. Smarter Prescription Understanding
Improve medicine extraction and identification using advanced document understanding and medical language models.
