Inspiration
As students, it is so difficult to check in on yourself and take breaks. At the end of the day, we are so tired and dread the next day of work. We wanted to build an application that promotes taking breaks in between work. Set notifications will be sent out during the day prompting tasks like "Take a Walk", "Straighten your back", or "Drink some water". This way, taking breaks can be normalized and users can share their moments with friends.
What it does
A user can sign into their Arc'teryx account. Throughout the day, whether it be on their laptop or phone notification, the user will be tasked with various wellness activites like "Take a Walk", "Straighten your back", or "Drink some water". The user can take a photo of themselves doing the task. Using Computer Vision, the task will be verified and then captured to be shared with friends and family.
How we built it
The front-end was built using React and TypeScript. The backend and Computer Vision functionality was built using ml5.js.
Challenges we ran into
Some challenges were implementing and using ml5.js. Our developers have never worked with computer vision, especially ml5.js, so it was very difficult trying to learn all its functionalities. On top of that, it was difficult to connect the front-end to the back-end.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are very proud of figuring out how to use ml5.js. It was definitely a challenge to incorporate since none of us had previous experience, but it was very rewarding. Also, it was so cool training the model and seeing that it successfully works detecting objects.
What we learned
We learned a lot about full-stack development and implementing cool features into our product. It was very fun and a challenging experience trying something new with computer vision.
What's next for ApexFit by Arc'teryx
To optimize the omnichannel aspect of the application, we want to develop a feature where once the photo is captured, users can earn points to be redeemed for discounts or free items. Additionally, every ApexFit post has the opportunity to get featured in stores if users are rocking Arc'teryx apparel. Also, it would be really cool to have unique computer vision features for each task. For example, measuring the distance of shoulders for posture. ApexFit would love to have seperate groups for different interests to further promote health and wellness along with community.
