APEX — AI Decision Intelligence for Industrial Operations
Inspiration
Industrial teams work with thousands of pages of SOPs, maintenance manuals, compliance documents, telemetry logs, and historical incident reports. During critical incidents, engineers often spend valuable time searching through disconnected systems instead of resolving the problem.
We built APEX to become an AI-powered decision intelligence platform that brings together enterprise knowledge, operational data, and explainable AI into a single intelligent workspace.
What it does
APEX helps industrial teams:
- Upload and index technical documents
- Build an enterprise knowledge graph
- Search documentation using AI-powered RAG
- Analyze incidents using historical operational memory
- Generate explainable AI recommendations
- Create executable maintenance runbooks
- Perform impact and dependency analysis
- Improve compliance and audit readiness
Instead of searching across multiple tools, engineers receive contextual recommendations backed by relevant documentation and evidence.
How we built it
Backend
- FastAPI
- SQLAlchemy
- PostgreSQL (Neon)
- Redis Cloud
- Qdrant Cloud
AI
- Google Gemini
- NVIDIA NIM
- Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)
- Vector Search
- Knowledge Graphs (NetworkX)
Frontend
- React
- TypeScript
- Tailwind CSS
- Vite
Challenges
One of the biggest challenges was combining multiple AI capabilities into a unified workflow while maintaining performance and reliability.
We designed a modular architecture integrating cloud databases, vector search, document ingestion, AI orchestration, and explainable reasoning into a single platform.
Another challenge was ensuring the system remained scalable while supporting document retrieval, graph analytics, and AI-assisted decision making.
Accomplishments
- Cloud-native backend architecture
- AI-powered document understanding
- Enterprise knowledge graph
- Explainable AI recommendations
- Automated runbook generation
- Production-ready authentication and RBAC
- Scalable vector search with Qdrant
- Modern cloud infrastructure using Neon and Redis
What we learned
Building APEX reinforced the importance of combining strong software engineering with modern AI systems. Reliable enterprise AI requires much more than LLMs—it depends on secure architecture, retrieval quality, structured knowledge, and explainability.
