Inspiration

n modern European football, the transfer market has reached astronomical levels. Elite clubs routinely pay upwards of €100M–€180M for established superstars like Erling Haaland, Jude Bellingham, or Rodri. Meanwhile, mid-table teams, smaller leagues, and budget-conscious clubs are priced out of contention if they rely solely on traditional, reputation-driven scouting.

Inspired by the original "Moneyball" philosophy popularized by Billy Beane and Brighton & Hove Albion's modern recruitment mastery, we set out to build ApexScout Pro. Our goal was simple: prove that clubs don't need a nine-figure budget to replace elite output. By profiling players across multi-dimensional, normalized performance metrics, clubs can identify statistically equivalent talent at a fraction of the market price.

What it does

ApexScout Pro is a smart football scouting dashboard that helps football clubs find young, undervalued players who play just like world-class superstars—for a fraction of the price.

How we built it

We engineered ApexScout Pro as a clean, high-density analytical dashboard tailored to the workflow of technical directors and recruitment analysts:

Analytical Engine & Mathematical Vector Modeling: To eliminate subjective bias, we modeled player performance by normalizing 6 core tactical metrics per 90 minutes into percentile scores ( M i ∈ [ 0 , 99 ] M i ∈[0,99]) relative to positional cohorts. We implemented a Normalized Euclidean Distance Vector Model to evaluate metric parity:

Similarity Fit (%)

( 1 − ∑

i

1 n ( M benchmark , i − M candidate , i ) 2 n × 100 2 ) × 100 Similarity Fit (%)=(1− n×100 2

∑ i=1 n (M benchmark,i −M candidate,i ) 2

)×100 Capital Efficiency & Arbitrage Index: We quantified the financial advantage of each prospective transfer by calculating the fee variance and the Capital Multiplier:

Capital Multiplier

Multi-Vector Radar Visualization: Using Chart.js, we built a responsive radar overlay that plots the benchmark superstar against the selected prospect in real time, making statistical strengths and trade-offs immediately visible.

Front-End Architecture: Built with HTML5, Modern JavaScript (ES6+), and Tailwind CSS, incorporating clean typography (Inter and JetBrains Mono) to deliver a professional, dark-mode software experience reminiscent of industry platforms like Wyscout and Opta Pro.

Challenges we ran into

Normalizing Diverse Positional Metrics: Strikers and holding midfielders operate in completely different statistical universes. We had to calibrate role-specific metric vectors—prioritizing Non-Penalty Expected Goals ( npxG npxG) and Box Touches for forwards, while focusing on Progressive Line-Breaking Passes and Press Resistance for pivots. Designing for Decision-Makers, Not Gimmicks: Many hackathon dashboards fall into the trap of "vibecoding"—heavy neon glows, decorative graphs, and low-density layouts. We challenged ourselves to build an authentic enterprise UX with clean 1px borders, instant filtering (by league, maximum fee, and U21/U24 age brackets), and actionable executive scouting summaries. Zero-Dependency Portability: We wanted anyone—judges, coaches, or scouts—to be able to clone and run the tool instantly without fighting package managers, broken builds, or complex local setups.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Mathematical Precision with Real Sports Data: Successfully developed and implemented a Normalized Euclidean Vector model that accurately quantifies player similarity across multiple tactical roles (strikers, playmakers, wingers, pivots, and center-backs). Enterprise-Grade UI/UX: Designed a high-density, professional sports analytics dashboard that avoids tacky gimmicks and instead mirrors authentic tools used by technical directors (such as Wyscout and StatsBomb Pro). Instant Financial Arbitrage Modeling: Built dynamic formulas that calculate transfer fee variances, capital multipliers, and budget savings in real time alongside statistical parity scores. Zero-Friction, Zero-Dependency Architecture: Created a fully responsive, lightweight application that runs instantly in any browser and on GitHub Pages with zero build dependencies, package installs, or local setup hurdles. Actionable Scouting Verdicts: Bridged raw quantitative metrics with qualitative scout intelligence, providing clear tactical strengths, developmental considerations, and executive recommendations for every player.

What we learned

Turning Data into Decisions: Data alone doesn't win games or save budgets; the real value comes from packaging complex metrics (like npxG/90 npxG/90 and progressive passes) into actionable recruitment insights. Normalization Across Different Positions: How to calibrate positional cohorts fairly—ensuring holding midfielders are judged on press resistance and ball retention, while forwards are evaluated on box touches and shot volume. Balancing UI Density and Usability: Mastered how to structure tabular data, radar visual overlays, and KPI ribbons into a clean hierarchy without overwhelming the user. The Power of Open-Source Sports Analytics: Discovered how open event percentiles can be democratized to empower smaller clubs and fans with elite-level scouting intelligence.

What's next for apex scout pro

Global League Expansion: Broadening the player pool beyond Europe into South American (Brasileirão, Argentine Primera) and Asian domestic leagues to discover prospects at an even earlier developmental stage. Predictive Career Trajectory & Aging Curves: Incorporating machine learning models to forecast how a 20-year-old’s output and market value will evolve over the next 3–5 seasons. Custom Tactical Weightings: Allowing club analysts and coaches to customize metric weights to match their specific tactical philosophy (e.g., high-pressing transition vs. possession-based positional play). Video Clip & Event Map Integration: Pairing statistical radar points with synchronized video highlights and spatial heatmaps for a complete 360° scouting platform.
