Inspiration

Our inspiration came from the lack of transparency apartment companies have with their listed prices. Some prices listed online are higher than the actual price. Sometimes apartment companies hide hidden fees from their price listings. We want to make this price history transparent and accurate for students looking for an apartment.

Sites like Apartments.com are inaccurate with their data and aren't curated towards the student community. We want to offer an experience that is curated towards UIUC students and only shows relevant apartments they would be interested in.

What it does

Apartments CU displays information about available apartments. Using the GoogleMaps API we have plotted the locations of apartments. Our app also has an options bar for selecting parameters for what you want in an apartment.

How we built it

We built an application using React and javascript. We started to build a backend using SQL.

Challenges we ran into

Collecting data is time consuming! Especially when it is sourced from human responses. We had to do some data cleaning to our survey responses, and have not received as much data as we liked.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We created a promising frontend for our app which we can build on in the future. We also used the GoogleMaps API to make our site centralize around location.

What we learned

We learned value experience in web app creation as well as working in Google Cloud. We also gained insight into data collection from the student community and some of the concerns around the housing shortage.

What's next for Apartments CU

We want to create a backend server that can take Apartments CU to its full functionality. We want to get a large set of data for a SQL database and create some queries to provide highly relevant apartment information.
