Inspiration
The inspiration for APADP came from a sobering realization: by 2050, antimicrobial resistance could kill 2 million people annually, yet traditional drug discovery takes 15 years and costs $1.3 billion per antibiotic with only a 1% success rate. I was particularly inspired by MIT's breakthrough discovery of Halicin in 2020 – the first antibiotic discovered using artificial intelligence. This proved that AI could revolutionize drug discovery, but I realized the technology needed to be more accessible and comprehensive. The urgency of superbugs evolving faster than our ability to develop new treatments drove me to create a platform that could democratize AI-powered antibiotic discovery and accelerate the fight against antimicrobial resistance.
