Inspiration

AO3 Enhanced was inspired by the need for trashy, easily-digestible content in conjunction with thoughtful, thematic works of fiction based on popular media. It was also inspired by a crippling existentialism and a desire to escape our reality into the realm of the fictional. Take that as you will - the antidote to boredom and cause of late-night scrolling.

What it does

Worried people behind you in lecture look over your shoulder at an importune opportunity and see the bad fanart you're frantically trying to scrolling past? AO3 Enhanced offers a feature to hide images from prying eyes, as well as to reverse the effect.

Ran into a Dead Dove: Do Not Eat fic but find yourself desperately curious? We got you - you can sneak a peek at the trigger warnings and figure out if it's a-non-kinky-person-trying-to-write-a-kinky-fic or if it's a psychotic individual coming at you with eldritch horrors.

Trying to stalk your favourite author with their bookmarks inaccessible because of the inability to filter for completion? AO3 Enhanced encourages binge-reading with no fear of unintentional cliff-hangers by adding that extra filter! Carelessly click on any fic you want without the terror of a serialized fanfiction with no end in sight!

The Building Process and Challenges

AO3 Enhanced was built with the utmost love, much pain and a few-almost tears. After a false start with the AO3 API, we pivoted towards JavaScript and optimizing AO3 through the user interaction via browser. Once we had established our means of execution, implementation was relatively smooth: as a passion project, our ideas for features were motivated and based in personal user experience.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our project offers a practical tool for a widely used platform. It is an extension useful on a personal level, one that many a friend would cherish. Our aesthetic is immaculate: the beautiful integration with the AO3 interface, the compatibility of the extension with the reading experience, and the smooth user experience - who could ask for more?

What's next for AO3 Enhanced

Given the time constraints, we were not able to fully develop our vision for AO3 Enhanced. Future updates would include: the 'or' filter (mixing two distinct fandoms without limiting it to fics with both), an author branch network (to visualize how authors interact and which authors yield fruitful bookmarks), the ability to see the reading level and grammar of fics etc.

Where AO3 is our beloved Archive of our Own, AO3 Enhanced is made for us as well. It's made to destigmatize the fandom and encourage self-expression (although we do not condone the extremes of pro-shipping). In the same way literary critics revere Dante for his lil queer fanboy epics, we have the liberty to shameless self-indulgence: why not engage with it on the best terms we can?
