Inspiration
As occupational therapy students at BU, we are passionate about increasing accessibility in all daily activities, including cooking (which we also love to do).
What it does
The goal for our website “Anyone Can Cook!” is to be able to convert any recipe into an accessible format. We want a user to be able to input a link to our website and it will be converted to an accessible format. This product implements universal design (meaning it is accessible to anyone), however our target audience is individuals who have visual, cognitive impairments and learning disabilities. However, this showcases one recipe and breaks down the steps in a way that reduces the cognitive load.
How we built it
We learned how to use basic Html, Css, and Javascript, with no previous experience. We also used Sublime Text to create and test our code.
Challenges we ran into
Due to time constraints and our limited experience with coding, we created a prototype that showcases one recipe chosen by us and how it would be modified to be more accessible.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully coded a website, which we've never done before, and learned new skills that we can use in our future profession!
What we learned
How to format pictures, change font sizes and colors, style code, use github, and so much more. Organizing html, css, and js files. Front-end vs back-end work. How to prioritize tasks based on experience/time.
What's next for Anyone Can Cook!: Accessible Cooking Guide
We hope that in the future this website can use any recipe found online and convert them into this accessible format. We also hope to provide more resources on the website including education on various kitchen assistive technology and how to purchase them. We also want to incorporate a text-to-audio feature that would read aloud any directions for individuals with visual impairments and to create a working progress bar.
