AnyJudge — The Story "Any judge. Any beef. Any verdict."
What Inspired Me I've been there. A stupid argument with a friend that spirals out of control. Who ate whose food? Who owes who money? Who was actually right in that group chat situation? I always said "I wish someone cool could just settle this for us." Not a real judge. Not a parent. Someone actually fun. That's where AnyJudge was born. What if my favorite celebrity — or even a fictional character — could hear both sides of my petty dispute and deliver a verdict? Imagine LeBron James judging a basketball argument. Katy Perry deciding who owes milk money. Or Homelander — completely unhinged — ruling on a friendship betrayal. That's the energy I was going for. I started with Homelander as my demo character because he perfectly captures the vibe — dramatic, unhinged, and oddly entertaining. But the real vision is a platform where anyone can pick any character, celebrity, or fictional figure to settle their beef. Any judge. Any beef. Any verdict.
What I Learned
How to use Gemini 2.5 Flash to inject personality into AI responses — making the judge actually feel like a character rather than a generic chatbot How ElevenLabs voice cloning works and how to pipe AI-generated text into a cloned voice in real time How to structure a multi-turn conversation where the AI asks questions to both parties before delivering a verdict That personality prompting is an art — getting Homelander to sound unhinged but still coherent took a lot of tuning That people immediately want to try it when you describe it — which told me the idea had legs
How I Built It The stack was kept simple and fast for the hackathon: Frontend
React + Vite for the UI Framer Motion for animations Dark courtroom aesthetic with gold accents, red vs blue team panels
Backend
Node.js + Express to handle API routing Kept API keys secure on the server side
AI Layer
Gemini 2.5 Flash for judge personality and conversation management System prompt engineered to capture Homelander's voice — calm, threatening, unhinged, patriotic Multi-turn conversation loop where the judge asks each party questions before ruling
Voice Layer
ElevenLabs voice clone for Homelander's voice TTS piped directly into the browser after every judge response Auto-plays so the experience feels seamless
The Flow: User Input→Gemini→Judge Response→ElevenLabs→Audio Output\text{User Input} \rightarrow \text{Gemini} \rightarrow \text{Judge Response} \rightarrow \text{ElevenLabs} \rightarrow \text{Audio Output}User Input→Gemini→Judge Response→ElevenLabs→Audio Output Each round: Roundn=Party A speaks+Party B speaks+Judge rules\text{Round}_n = \text{Party A speaks} + \text{Party B speaks} + \text{Judge rules}Roundn=Party A speaks+Party B speaks+Judge rules Until the final verdict: Verdict=f(all rounds, personality, case context)\text{Verdict} = f(\text{all rounds},\ \text{personality},\ \text{case context})Verdict=f(all rounds, personality, case context)
Challenges I Faced Getting the personality right The hardest part was making the AI actually sound like Homelander and not just a generic judge. Generic prompts gave generic answers. I had to be very specific — referencing his speech patterns, his ego, his threats, his fake warmth — before it started clicking. Voice latency ElevenLabs TTS takes a second or two to generate. Managing that delay so the UI felt smooth and not broken required careful state management and loading states throughout the app. Conversation flow Keeping the AI on track — asking one question at a time, alternating between parties, knowing when to deliver the verdict — required careful prompt engineering and conversation state management on the backend. Time pressure Building a full voice-enabled, animated, AI-powered courtroom in one night is a lot. I had to cut scope fast and focus on what made the demo feel magical rather than trying to build everything at once.
What's Next AnyJudge is just the beginning. The real vision is a fully customizable courtroom where any judge — celebrity, fictional character, or historical figure — can rule on any dispute.
