Inspiration
In February 2020, whilst talking with a team member about our goal to help humans better connect, the idea emerged to put our existing technology at the service of citizens, and bypass surveys and politically charged media.
Our mission is to serve groups of individuals, whether it's a company or a city to be more self-aware of themselves via the Designed Company framework. We realised during our conversations that cities are also a form of "business," just one with different goals. They buy products & services, have employees and serve their "customers" ie. the citizens.
What it does
Grenoble Citoyen collects citizens' feedback on key city matters through Facebook Messenger. It analyses and immediately displays results on a public portal
How I built it
Grenoble Citoyen is based on our existing Anya chatbot technology, that is the result of nearly 2 years of research and development. We have designed a powerful system that can be used to quickly model conversations and is currently used to provide continuous surveys to companies.
Our server-side technology is built with NodeJS, Typescript, Express & MongoDB + SQL. Our client-side platform is a cross-platform interface built with Angular.
Challenges I ran into
We expected explosive user growth, which has not been the case. However, instead of just running this for a couple weeks (during election period), we have decided to make Grenoble Citoyen an ongoing concern in the city of Grenoble. Various meetings are taking place in the coming weeks.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Once we decided to launch Grenoble Citoyen, it only took us 10 days to adapt our existing Anya tech, get a website up and running and integrate Facebook Messenger.
We have also received significant interest from citizens and are actively engaging with various groups to make Grenoble Citoyen into a tool used by local political representatives when elaborating and communicating on their policies.
What I learned
Facebook Messenger can be a powerful tool to help create a more united civil society. Of the people we spoke with, everyone loved the ease of interaction with the Grenoble Citoyen chatbot. We've realised that there's a huge amount we can do, and will do, to reduce barriers to entry concerning citizen debates and build a more peaceful, profound, trusting and empathetic public debate.
What's next for Grenoble Citoyen
We will work with the city of Grenoble and other cities to make this into an ongoing initiative that is promoted by the city. Our goal is to help democracy involve people's collective intelligence.
