Project Story: *Anubis' Reckoning*
Inspiration
The inspiration for Anubis' Reckoning came from my fascination with ancient Egyptian mythology and the idea of extraterrestrial influence on early civilizations. I wanted to create a world where history and science fiction blend seamlessly, allowing players to explore a temple filled with both ancient puzzles and advanced alien technology. Escape rooms, archaeological discoveries, and sci-fi storytelling all played a role in shaping the vision for this project.
What It Does
Anubis' Reckoning is a VR escape room game where players take on the role of an archaeologist who discovers a hidden Egyptian temple infused with alien technology. To progress, they must solve intricate hieroglyphic puzzles, manipulate ancient mechanisms, and evade temple guardians—mystical constructs that combine divine power with advanced engineering. Each decision affects the journey, leading to multiple possible outcomes.
How We Built It
The game was developed using Meta Horizon Worlds, utilizing its scripting tools to create interactive puzzles and environmental storytelling. I focused on designing an immersive temple setting with a balance of historical accuracy and futuristic elements. The mechanics were built using a mix of logic-based scripting and visual design to ensure seamless player interaction.
Challenges We Ran Into
One of the biggest challenges was optimizing interactions within the VR space, ensuring puzzles felt intuitive yet challenging. Designing the alien-infused Egyptian aesthetic required extensive research to keep it visually compelling without breaking immersion. Playtesting also revealed the need to refine puzzle difficulty to maintain engagement without frustration.
Accomplishments That We're Proud Of
I’m particularly proud of how the temple’s design seamlessly integrates Egyptian architecture with alien elements. The puzzle mechanics also turned out to be highly engaging, requiring players to think critically and explore deeply. Seeing the world come to life in VR and watching testers experience the sense of discovery has been incredibly rewarding.
What We Learned
This project deepened my understanding of game design, environmental storytelling, and player interaction in VR. I also learned the importance of balancing challenge and accessibility in puzzle design.
What's Next for *Anubis' Reckoning*
Moving forward, I plan to expand the game with additional puzzles, interactive lore elements, and new environments to further immerse players in the mystery. There’s also potential to refine the AI of temple guardians, making them more dynamic in response to player actions. Ultimately, I aim to turn Anubis' Reckoning into a polished experience that can be showcased as both an educational and entertainment-driven escape room adventure.
