Inspiration

We we're inspired by the website havebeenipwned.com and came up with an idea to do a similar website for files after finding out that many image files have GPS data embedded in their metadata and many non-technical users are unaware of this fact when sharing these files.

What it does

It provides an easy website interface to upload files to our backend API that then tells the user if any possible confidential information is apparent in the file and then provides an option to clean the file of such information.

How we built it

Using python and it's FastAPI for the backend to receive and process files for potential confidential information. For the frontend we had a simple HTML website that could interact with our backend API and display the information.

Challenges we ran into

  • Increased and required complexity for the HTML that became unmanageable.
  • First hackathon so we had a lack of experience and a difference of skill-barriers within the group.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • A cool looking website.
  • The backend API works pretty well.

What we learned

  • Exiftool - A command-line tool for extracting metadata.
  • Python Project Management.

What's next for Dox-Prevention

  • More detections for confidential information in files (i.e. faces, names, confidential documentation, etc.)
