Inspiration
Our team loves learning about nature. We thought people would like to learn the nature too, so we decided to research some animals, and we thought the ants would be interesting and suitable for a game. Also we love watching AntsCanada, and AntsCanada gave us our first spark of inspiration.
What it does
We play as a springtail which disguises as an ant using pheromones. There is a symbiotic relationship between ants and springtails. This game teaches the player what ants eat, gather, and how their colonies are shaped.
How we built it
We used Godot Engine 4 to build a game with a Github Repository via Github Desktop. One of our members did all of the assets used in the game using Aseprite. We downloaded the sound effects and the music from pixabay.com.
Challenges we ran into
Since there isn't many new Godot tutorials our codes almost never worked. We learned GDScript from scratch for it and still faced many troubles. Also giving the informations with a game was difficult, we needed to plan things out for it.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We managed to debug all the code we used and tested many times. We managed to fix every bug we faced and finished the game we planned to make. We managed to learn GDScript from scratch. Also our artist did an awesome job animating and designing the game. Our team managed to code new things without needing any instructions and did it on their own. With that, we successfully made the ant game which will hopefully teach many players about ants' lifestyle.
What we learned
We learned that teaching with tools to make learning fun can be hard, but in the end it's rewarding. Also we learned to use many tools, and programs like Godot, Github, Aseprite.
What's next for Antfolk Trails
We plan to add new colonies featuring new ants from every part of the world like: Cephalotes, Leafcutter Ants, Weaver Ants. With adding different habitats for each ant type. This way our players will be able to learn about many ant types around them.
