Inspiration

Space has always represented the ultimate frontier—vast, mysterious, and isolating. As fans of both science fiction and space exploration, we imagined the emotional and psychological toll of long-term space travel. Astronauts face not just physical challenges, but the mental strain of isolation, monotony, and distance from loved ones.

In a zero-G environment, the body and mind are constantly challenged. The absence of gravity not only affects physical functions but also disrupts the mind’s usual sense of balance, orientation, and routine, leading to increased stress, anxiety, and confusion. Antennae Galaxies was inspired by the need to address these unique challenges, creating a therapeutic solution that is literally and metaphorically gravity-defying.

What It Does

Antenna Galaxies: A Journey to Mental Resilience

In the immense silence of space, where isolation and pressure weigh heavy, Antenna Galaxies offers astronauts a pathway to emotional well-being. Guided by the Sun—powered by OpenAI’s Realtime API with voice communication—users embark on an interactive journey through a beautifully rendered 3D solar system. Each planet represents a unique mental health challenge, with the Sun helping identify emotional states and guiding users to the planets that best meet their needs:

  • Mercury for reflection: Encourages users to reflect on isolation and process their emotions, helping them find clarity in solitude.
  • Venus for connection: Fosters self-love and mindfulness, helping users strengthen their bonds with themselves and distant loved ones.
  • Mars for resilience: Aids in managing anxiety and stress, building mental toughness to overcome challenges.
  • Jupiter for perspective: Offers prompts to broaden users' views and reflect on the bigger picture.
  • Neptune for sleep disorders: Provides tools to regulate disrupted sleep patterns caused by space conditions.
  • Saturn for discipline: Helps maintain routine and focus, with exercises on goal-setting and concentration during long missions.

The Sun listens, engages in real-time voice conversations, and delivers personalized AI-driven therapy, tackling issues like stress, anxiety, and isolation. Antenna Galaxies seamlessly integrates real-time voice communication, data, and interactive prompts to offer astronauts actionable mental health support.

"Even in the silence of the stars, there is a voice—a light—leading you back to strength."

How We Built It

  • Front-end: Developed using Spline for 3D rendering, and custom CSS, HTML, and JavaScript for interactive components. The design simulates a journey through the solar system, linking the zero-G mental therapy concept to immersive, therapeutic planetary experiences.
  • Back-end: Powered by OpenAI’s Realtime GPT API, integrated with LiveKit for real-time communication, and enhanced through prompt engineering and system instructions.

Challenges We Ran Into

  • Technical hurdles: We faced challenges in connecting the back-end to the front-end due to API call issues.
  • Team health issues: Some team members encountered health challenges, impacting progress.
  • Defining the scope: Reaching consensus on the final topic took time, but we successfully overcame this.

Accomplishments We’re Proud Of

  • Consensus on the topic: Despite initial hurdles, we finalized a meaningful project vision.
  • User testing: Every team member explored the planets and found the experience personally impactful.
  • Back-end/front-end integration: We successfully connected the components, creating a seamless experience.
  • Interactive web app: We’re proud of building an engaging and interactive web platform that makes mental wellness immersive and fun.

What We Learned

  • Effective team collaboration: It’s essential to consider each teammate's productivity and creativity levels to maintain smooth progress.
  • Debugging AI interactions: Fine-tuning the AI to deliver meaningful results took longer than expected.
  • The power of narrative: A compelling story is key to engaging users and making the platform impactful.

What's Next for Antenna Galaxies

  • AR/VR integration: Expanding the experience beyond the web, with possible development for Apple Vision Pro.
  • Social and community features: Adding interaction among users to foster community support in space and beyond.
  • Acoustic enhancements: Improving the quality and immersion of voice communication.
  • Beyond the solar system: Extending the journey beyond our solar system, allowing users to explore new galaxies and challenges.
