Inspiration

We wanted to create a strategy game that felt different from the usual kingdoms, castles, and military settings commonly found in the genre. Ant colonies are fascinating because they naturally function as highly organized societies with workers, soldiers, resource management, expansion, and defense systems already built into their behavior.

The idea of becoming the leader of an underground ant kingdom felt like a fresh way to combine tower defense, strategy, and colony management into a single experience. We were also inspired by the hidden world beneath our feet and wanted to give players the fantasy of building and protecting an entire civilization from the ground up.

What it does

Ant King is a tower defense and strategy game where players take on the role of a scientist who has been mysteriously shrunk to insect size and appointed as the Ant King of a growing ant colony.

Players gather resources, expand tunnels, construct specialized chambers, recruit ant units, and prepare defenses against invading insect factions. As the colony grows, players unlock stronger units, new technologies, and advanced defensive options while protecting the Queen from increasingly dangerous enemy waves.

The goal is to transform a small vulnerable nest into a thriving underground kingdom capable of surviving any threat.

How we built it

Ant King was designed around a simple but engaging gameplay loop: Gather, Build, Prepare, Defend, and Progress.

We first focused on defining the colony structure and identifying the key systems that would support long-term gameplay. Specialized chambers such as the Queen Chamber, Nursery, Military Chamber, and Research Chamber were created to give players meaningful strategic choices.

From there, we developed ant unit roles, enemy factions, progression systems, defensive mechanics, and evolution paths. Every feature was designed to reinforce the core fantasy of leading and protecting a living underground kingdom.

The visual direction was built around a stylized underground world featuring warm lighting, natural environments, glowing crystals, and visually distinct ant units that are easy to recognize during gameplay.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was balancing colony management with tower defense gameplay. We wanted players to feel like they were building a civilization, but we also needed defense and strategy to remain the primary focus.

Another challenge was designing insects that felt approachable and visually appealing without becoming overly cartoonish. We wanted the world to feel adventurous and immersive while remaining easy to understand and navigate.

We also spent time refining the progression systems to ensure players constantly felt rewarded while maintaining meaningful strategic decisions throughout the experience.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Creating a unique strategy game set entirely within an underground insect kingdom.
  • Combining colony management and tower defense into a cohesive gameplay experience.
  • Designing a progression system that supports multiple playstyles and strategies.
  • Building a world that feels alive, organized, and worth protecting.
  • Developing a strong visual identity that supports both gameplay readability and atmosphere.
  • Creating a concept that can easily expand with new enemy factions, units, environments, and challenges.

What we learned

Throughout development, we learned how effective real-world ant colony behaviors can be as inspiration for gameplay systems. Many of the mechanics naturally emerged from studying how colonies gather resources, expand territory, and defend themselves.

We also learned the importance of clarity in strategy games. Players need to quickly understand priorities, threats, and opportunities, especially during high-pressure defense scenarios.

Most importantly, we learned that building the battlefield can be just as satisfying as defending it, creating a deeper connection between players and the kingdom they create.

What's next for Ant King

Future development will focus on expanding both the colony and the underground world around it.

Planned additions include:

  • New enemy insect factions
  • Larger underground regions to explore
  • Additional ant unit types
  • Boss encounters and special invasions
  • Expanded evolution paths
  • Rare resources and discoveries
  • New chamber types and upgrades
  • Environmental hazards and events
  • Deeper story content surrounding the mysterious mutations beneath the surface

Our long-term vision is to grow Ant King into a rich strategy experience where every colony feels unique and every defensive victory feels earned.
