Inspiration

Inspired by Baba Is You and tower defence games, we would like to build a strategy game that crosses the two - players can manipulate the rules of the world by pushing word blocks around to defend their bases against enemies.

What it does

Players need to defend their towers against enemies to win the game, they can change the rules of the game through modifying pushable word blocks

Game design

Aim: protect the base and defeat enemies

Settings:

  • 5 waves of enemies

  • Players can buff their base/ towers (defence/ attack/ hp up) or change properties of attack/ debuff enemy (attack/ speed/ defence down) by moving word blocks in the designated areas

  • The number of enemies per wave and enemies attack, speed and hp increase when levelling up

How we built it

  • Sprints design using Piskel

  • Game development using GameMaker Studio 2

Challenges we ran into

We are an international team with 3 different timezones, finding a time that's suitable for everyone to meet and discuss is challenging. We overcame this by effective communication and planning in discord.

None of us have experience in creating games using GameMaker Studio. We spent a lot of time going through documentations and trying things out. We encountered a lot of bugs when testing the game, and spent so much time debugging and soaking oneself in coffee.
