Inspiration
Grief, regret, and longing for closure are deeply human experiences. We wanted to explore the emotional power of "what if" by turning a memory into a poetic reflection.
What it does
Users submit a memory they wish had gone differently. The app returns an imagined alternate scenario and a heartfelt letter from their "other self" — poetic, emotional, and healing.
How we built it
We used GPT-4.1-mini via OpenAI to generate deeply emotional responses. The app is built with Netlify Functions, Supabase (optional storage), and a mobile-friendly frontend using TailwindCSS + Vite.
Challenges we ran into
-Ensuring the output feels personal and not generic -Managing API timeouts and error rates -Structuring prompts for balanced tone and formatting
Accomplishments that we're proud of
-Generating touching, high-quality prose in seconds -Designing an emotional UX that feels therapeutic -Completing a fully working MVP in just hours
What we learned
-Prompt engineering for emotional storytelling -How to gracefully handle edge cases and model failures -That even AI can help process human emotions
What's next for Another Life
-Let users reply to their “other self” -Add voice narration for the letter -Build a shareable memory archive for the community
