Inspiration - The conditions and huge issues that are occurring regarding job loss and huge lay offs causing massive financial and emotional struggles for millions of Americans inspired us to create a platform to aid them and provide support in the form of food, shelter, or education. We also ensured that the platform will involve the entire community as everyone can access it and learn something, and also donate and do their part for society. We also noticed that such a platform isn't very comprehensive and effective on the internet, so we wanted to start our own initiative to fill that gap. With the help of other young leaders, we can truly improve and expand our platform with the donation and support of the community.
What it does - Our website provides people in need with information for their local food banks and shelters. It provides a streamlined interface for extending and adding new features to allow everyone to connect and virtually help. It incorporates location and necessity for those using the website to provide them with local places they can use to get resources and necessities they cannot afford. Finally, it provides multiple resources for educational purposes that are credible sources that spread the right information.
How I built it - I used repl.it and html and css, utilizing bootstrap and java script to maximize the features available for us to use. To track the location of the user, with their consent of course, we used geolocation feature of html and embedded google form and google map API's. Additionally, we incorporated links to external videos to consolidate information on our website and provide gateways for our users to find proper, credible information.
Challenges I ran into - The largest challenge was thinking of an innovative, creative, and feasible idea that has not been implemented yet while also making an impact on society. Another challenge was incorporating the different aspects such as education and communication into our project. Formatting on repl.it also was at times very problematic and the server crashed many times. Finally, we also had trouble with the formatting of images and coding different special features such as menus and images. Figuring out the geolocation and embedding different API's should also be an honorable mention here since it took lots of researching and very tedious work. The nature of html and the tedious focus necessary also made all of these tasks more challenging.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of - We are proud that we were able to use more advanced concepts such as API's and learning the different special aspects of html such as bootstrapping that we never knew of before but made our lives so much easier. In addition, we are proud of just spending the day coding and learning and expanding on our knowledge of html and css. Finally, our innovative idea and the effort we spent thinking of and implementing this idea to help others made us very proud.
What I learned - I learned more about html and css and the special features that we incorporated into our project. In addition, we also researched into the effects of the coronavirus and that inspired us to create a website oriented towards helping others who have not been so fortunate. The workshops were also very interesting and useful in helping us combat not only the problems we faced today, but more advanced concepts for coding that we may need to learn in the future.
What's next for Anonymous Hope Platform - Team #17 - We plan to continue expanding our website if it does gain traction on the internet and continue advocating for and promoting helping others and society in general. The website has a lot of growth potential and there are many more innovative ideas that can be implemented that would just take time and effort. Recruiting more people and potentially even allowing organizations to utilize our website to take it to the next level are all ideas that we can use in the future to help others and improve society.
