Inspiration

Understanding the grammatical structures of the Bible in its original languages is often important for thorough exegetical study, but many of the tools to do this are prohibitively expensive. Our mentor has created a free website for Greek study, and we got started on making it functional for Hebrew study as well. [http://anoixo.sheesania.com/]

What it does

We took a Hebrew text of the Bible where every word is tagged with its morphological and lexical attributes. We developed a program to query and select these attributes to make the text searchable by word or grammatical category. We also made plans for how to adapt the front end that was designed for Greek to work for Hebrew, since the two languages differ in grammatical structure.

How we built it

Emily worked through the tags to determine what each abbreviation meant and what information should be searched, while Sammi developed the code for the different categories and made them searchable.

Challenges we ran into

Probably the biggest challenge was breaking down the morphological strings to pick out the important information, since they encapsulate almost the entire grammar of Hebrew.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

It was so cool to see how we could take our different skill sets and combine them! It was also inspiring to be able to make substantial progress in such a short time.

What we learned

That it is possible to make a contribution to ministry in such a short time! And that even someone with no prior coding experience can get involved!

What's next for Anoixo - Hebrew Edition

The next steps involve developing the UI for the Hebrew section and localizing the whole website, so that it can be made available to students of the Bible in many languages.

Actually, another challenge was making a video - here is the explanation of our inspiration and goals, while the technical walkthrough is above: [https://youtu.be/6B7wTPPcnfI]
