Inspiration
Every day, perfectly good food is thrown away by homes, restaurants, and events, while people nearby go hungry. The food exists and the people who need it exist, but nothing connects them quickly. Annasetu ("anna" = food, "setu" = bridge) is our attempt to build that bridge: a platform where surplus food can be listed and reach those who need it before it goes to waste.
What it does
Annasetu lets donors post surplus food and lets people or organizations in need find and claim it.
How we built it
- Frontend: HTML, CSS, and JavaScript (
index.html,app.js,data.js), plus an interactive 3D hero section (hero3d.js) to make the landing page memorable. - Backend: A Flask (Python) API that handles requests from the frontend.
- Database: MySQL to store users, food listings, and claims reliably.
- Deployment: Code on GitHub, the database hosted on Aiven, and the web service deployed on Render, so the app runs online and not just on our laptops.
Challenges we ran into
- Adding a real backend to a frontend-only project. The app began as static files with data in
data.js. Moving that data into MySQL and connecting it through Flask meant rethinking how the frontend fetched and saved information. - Going from local to live. Running on localhost is easy. Hosting the database on Aiven, deploying on Render, and managing environment variables and database credentials safely took a lot of debugging.
- Keeping the repo organized so the project, which lives in a subfolder, deployed correctly from GitHub.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We took Annasetu from a static prototype to a working full-stack app with a hosted database and a live deployment.
What we learned
- How to design a MySQL schema and connect it to a Flask backend
- How to deploy a full-stack app using GitHub, Render, and a managed cloud database
- How to handle secrets and configuration without hardcoding them
- Debugging across layers: frontend, API, database, and hosting
What's next for Annasetu
We're currently adding a login page for donors and NGOs, so each can have their own account, donors can manage their listings, and NGOs can securely claim and track food pickups.
