Inspiration
With hardworking students on our team, each with individual study strategies to suit our own needs, we were inspired by the idea of combining self-care and study habits to help enhance one's awareness of learning needs. This led us to expand our view to see what it could look like to include fun rewards, and strategic study plans. We know it can be difficult and stressful to find a study system that works. So, we hoped to ease this burden and stress for students by helping them understand how they can be successful, motivated, and mindful in their pursuit of academic goals with an Animo friend cheering you on.
What it does
We created an app with a diagnostic quiz to help students find a study system. The user has the option to explore different study methods or customize it, in the case that the user already has a preferred study method. Students can upload goals, use a timer, and connect with other students through weekly question forums. As a motivator, students also get to choose an animal that grows with their progress in the app. They’re allowed to change the animal and shop for items for the animal. By completing daily tasks the animal gains affection, and the student earns coins to spend toward their animal. As they gain affection, eventually the selected animal will level up, thus increasing the coins gained from daily tasks. Overall, our application proposal aims to help students become motivated towards their studying, find effective and efficient ways to study, and through this successfully achieve their academic goals.
How we built it
Our current wireframe is built in figma. We’d planned to use python to begin coding the diagnostic quiz on Google Colaboratory, though that was not finished and is thus not part of this submission.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into issues when considering a portion of the app being designed to help students connect. It was a sort of “Find a Study Buddy” map, where the user could find fellow Animo keepers to study with according to subject, level, and location. This introduced issues with privacy and monitoring for safety, as well as the realization that the map would add a whole new complexity to the app – for example, the addition of direct messaging. We decided to block the map then, in favor of a forum where users could respond to weekly questions and connect via any social media links on their profile.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
As a team we had never met before this week and didn’t finalize our team until the start of this event. Most of our members have never done a hackathon prior to this event. We are extremely proud of coming together as a team and navigating the challenges of such a large project given our experience and the short amount of time.
What we learned
Some of us learned to use figma for the first time and got an introduction to coding. Others learned more about the design process. And all of us got some practice in navigating and organizing an app, especially a large one with features that each of us contributed to.
What's next for Animo
The next steps would include revising the planned pages and working to determine how to best program and create the android app. Right now, everything is very lofi, and there is quite a bit of work to do. Color schemes, icons, the Animo avatar art, so on and so forth. Some parts are missing as well, such as the setting and profile pages. Not to mention all the coding that would have gone into creating the forum, coding out the diagnostic, etc. We would also consider the scope of the project and research more into study methods to better understand our chosen topic.
