Inspiration
I was walking outside with a friend and we saw a Spotted Latternfly. Initially, I thought it is a kind of moths. Later on, I found its actually a invasive species. So, I thought if could have an app or online resources for me to upload a picture of it and other people could help me identify it. I would realize what it is sooner. It inspire me to build up this project.
What it does
User could either upload a picture on the platform and either identify the animal yourself or leave the identify blank for other user to help identify it. User could also open the photo archive to view the animal picture that has already been upload and documented in the database.
How we built it
I used Django to build it.
Challenges we ran into
I have never use Django before. I have only started learning programming for a year. My knowledge of OOD, front and back end are very limited. I have to learn a lot of new stuff within limited amount of time. But I am glad I can push thru.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
What we learned
What's next for Animals of Brooklyn
There are lots of feature I could add it to this project. For now, the uploading system won't able to detect unwanted pictures. Adding machine learning models may help automatically identify animal category and prevent false identification or labeling. I could also expand the map to larger area such as using country as a unit instead of one city. Map could be replace by interactive map by using advanced map API such as google map.
