Inspiration

From videos, articles and news articles about the illegal wildlife trade, we realize that there is no technological solution to stop these cases. we are wildlife lovers who built a team with the goal of finding a solution to stop the internet trade in rare wildlife, which prompted us to come up with a solution, this product

What it does

Animal Protect is an extension to help report wildlife trade information on websites that use AI to extract illegal information.

How we built it

We approached this problem by gauging what we can create in the two days and how easily we can scale it. We were also very keen on providing not just a proof of concept, but also a prototype. Hence, we decided to do an extension and a web dashboard app.

It is important that users can easily report wildlife violations on the internet. So we have created a browser extension with small size and easy to install. In addition, a beautiful dashboard to help managers easily make statistics and review data is also essential. We also have an API for developers of other platforms like zalo and facebook to integrate into their platforms.

Challenges we ran into

We had difficulty optimizing performance when scanning the website for words and images related to the wildlife trade. An optimal browsing algorithm has been written, accompanied by and using AI on google cloud, this helps us take advantage of the power of the server. Also, it's quite difficult to build a nice interface in such a short time, but we have somehow made sure our app is easy to use.

We choose a problem statement and discuss it with the group to come up with ideas. Geographical distance and working with more than half of the members online is a big challenge. Members who work offline also face challenges as they face the spread of the covid 19 pandemic

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • First, AI is successfully used for image processing
  • Second, the language processing algorithm gives good results, we can detect changed words such as: e.g., s.u.n.g
  • Finally, the interface with detailed statistical charts of the project's results

What we learned

From this competition, we learned a lot about wildlife as well as wildlife conservation. Besides, we also hone our soft skills, teamwork skills, and technical skills. Especially, we learned how to solve the problem in a short time. After this hackathon, we realize our strengths and weaknesses to improve ourselves day by day.
