Inspiration

The pandemic has forced us to go virtual in nearly every aspect of our lives. Many children have never been to or remember going to a museum or conservatory, and may only know about them through video games and TV. Our goal with the ACNH Field Guide was to create a companion to Animal Crossing that would allow families to easily learn more while playing the game and tracking their progress. With ACNH Field Guide, kids can learn about bugs and fish while collecting them for their in-game museum, nurturing their science education and creating a more in-depth museum experience.

What it does

The ACNH Field Guide contains a database of all fish and insects in the video game Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Each entry contains information regarding the creature and links to external websites to learn more about them. Users can search the list for creatures they've caught and add them to their collection, so they can keep track of what they already have, and what they still need to catch.

How we built it

We used Vue, TailwindCSS and NuxtJS to build our frontend, and used a Firebase database to store animal crossing data retrieved from the Animal Crossing API. We then deployed our project through Firebase.

Challenges we ran into

We struggled to understand some of the languages initially as it was our first times using these technologies. We did however, quickly overcome this hurdle. There were also some frustrating bugs we ran in the prototyping stage and we did not implement our last feature which was user login and session save.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to have a tangible app to show off to the judges!

What we learned

  • New technologies: Firebase and NuxtJS.
  • We learned to set expectations, and understand what can be accomplished between two team members.
  • We would've definitely been able to implement a user login/signup page if we hade more team members or time.

What's next for Animal Crossing: Field Guide

  • Information on what creatures are currently available and where to find them in-game
  • Account creation and sharing collection with friends
  • Session Save
