My girlfriend is a Vet Tech and was talking to me about dosages for anesthesia. She is not very good at math and this worries me, as this will take extra time, and miscalculations can be fatal.

This app takes in an input of if an animal is a Feline or Canine, and how many pounds they weigh. It then converts it to Kilograms, and then runs the formula for each drug needed, returning the appropriate amount of dosage. It also has confirmations in case of a typo. For example, if you picked "Canine" and inserted a weight over 100, it would ask to make sure if this was the correct weight. It also states where / how the drugs should be injected, and which drugs are needed for Pre-Med, Induction, and Post-Op.

I started off in Python using PyCharm to have a general idea of what it would do, and how the logic would look. I sculpted most of it in comments, then filled it in with code. My girlfriend would tell me what she needed, which I wrote down in a notebook, confirmed all the formulas, and then translated it into code.

I really wanted to create this into a mobile app, because carrying it around in a flash drive then putting it into a computer then booting up the program would not be very fast, nor mobile. I do know Java, but would need to learn Android Studio, and I don't think I would have had enough time to do so.

I'm proud of being able to actually sit down and focus, as I am almost always side tracked when I start a new project. Not only that, but eventually when I work on this some more, I can either publish it as an App, or just give it to people who would need it.

I learned that it is probably not possible to learn a whole new language (Kotlin and IntelliJ) in under 24 hours, nor should you push yourself to do so unless you are willing to push yourself that hard. I also learned a lot of how the anesthetic portion of surgeries go for animals, which was very interesting.

After the Hackathon, I will be learning Kotlin and IntelliJ at my own pace to make this into a full blown app. So far, it looks like something that is actually achievable for me to do, and it feels very exciting.
