Inspiration

We were inspired by Pixar short films, paper flipbooks, and the emotion that can be portrayed by such simple movements and motions. We wanted to create a plot within the span of only a few frames that could still portray a story. While Animaker's program is demonstrated with a playful cat and a ball of yarn, the code can be used to run any frame-by-frame animation.

What it does

Animaker renders pre-uploaded images in the user's desired sequence in order to lay out a story line via animation.

How we built it

Emma drew storyboarded the plot of our example animation in Autodesk Sketchbook, and then drew each of the 21 frames out by hand. As she worked, Adit built the code, using other images as placeholders, in Pygame. Once Emma finished the frames, she emailed them to Adit, who fed them into the program, creating our animation.

Challenges we ran into

Last minute, we had difficulty running our code and displaying the cat and yarn animation. However, we quickly realized that the images had been uploaded at too large of a scale and simply had to be compressed in order to fit on screen.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of simply completing this project. Neither of us planned to participate in High Tech Hacks until the night before. While one of us can draw quite well and the other can code quite well, we certainly have no idea how to swap skills. Teamwork and communication were a huge part in our success, and we're quite proud to have something to show for our dedication.

What we learned

We learned that the tedious path is, at times, the one that must be taken. Drawing out each frame was tiring, and tinkering with the code when we were having trouble uploading the frames was frustrating, but our sticktoitiveness helped us problem solve and push through.

What's next for Animaker

We're hoping to animate longer and more complex stories with Animaker, and maybe even share our creations on social media!
