Inspiration
Fishing conditions are constantly changing, and most anglers rely on multiple disconnected sources like weather apps, fishing forums, seasonal charts, and lake reports to figure out where and what to fish for.
We wanted to simplify that process by building a platform that intelligently combines environmental conditions, nearby waters, and species behavior into a single modern experience.
As anglers ourselves, we thought it would be incredibly useful to have a tool that could instantly recommend nearby fishing opportunities based on real-world conditions instead of forcing users to manually research everything themselves.
That idea became Angling Intelligence.
What it does
Angling Intelligence is a smart fishing recommendation platform designed for Ontario anglers.
Users enter a location, and the platform:
- finds nearby fishing waters
- retrieves real-time environmental conditions
- analyzes fishing opportunities
- recommends fish species that are most active
- generates opportunity scores for each species
- presents everything through an interactive modern UI
The platform combines weather data, species behavior patterns, and fishing logic to generate intelligent recommendations that help users decide where and what to fish for.
How we built it
We built the frontend using:
- React
- Vite
- Tailwind CSS
- Framer Motion
The backend was built using:
- Node.js
- Express.js
Our system uses external APIs and custom scoring logic to:
- geocode user locations
- retrieve weather conditions
- locate nearby waters
- analyze species opportunities
- generate dynamic recommendation scores
We also spent a large amount of time refining the UX/UI experience by implementing:
- expandable interactive cards
- smooth animations
- responsive layouts
- visual scoring systems
- intuitive navigation flows
One of our biggest goals was making the application feel like a polished real-world product rather than just a prototype.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was designing the recommendation system itself.
We had to figure out how to combine multiple environmental and fishing-related factors into a scoring model that felt believable and useful while still remaining lightweight enough for a hackathon project.
Another major challenge was frontend architecture and UX flow.
As the project evolved, we completely redesigned large portions of the frontend to create a cleaner and more scalable user experience. We moved from a simple expandable layout into a multi-page interactive experience with dedicated lake and species views.
We also ran into challenges integrating APIs, managing asynchronous frontend/backend communication, and ensuring the UI remained responsive while handling dynamic recommendation data.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're especially proud of:
- building a fully functional full-stack application within the hackathon timeframe
- creating a polished and modern user experience
- implementing intelligent recommendation logic
- designing smooth expandable interactions and animations
- building a project that feels like a real consumer-facing platform
We’re also proud that the application successfully combines practical usefulness with strong visual design and technical implementation.
What we learned
Throughout this project we learned a lot about:
- full-stack application architecture
- API integration
- frontend state management
- responsive UI/UX design
- asynchronous data handling
- designing scalable application flows
- collaborative Git/GitHub workflows
We also learned how important iteration is in product development. Many parts of the frontend were redesigned multiple times before reaching the final experience.
Most importantly, we learned how much polish and usability can elevate a technical project.
What's next for Angling Intelligence
In the future, we would love to expand Angling Intelligence into a complete smart fishing platform.
Some future features include:
- interactive fishing maps
- AI-generated fishing insights
- personalized recommendations
- saved user profiles
- catch logging and analytics
- live water condition tracking
- mobile app support
- advanced seasonal prediction systems
Our long-term vision is to create a platform that makes fishing more accessible, data-driven, and enjoyable for anglers everywhere.
