NihonGoAIR: Learn Japanese Through the Lens of Your World

Inspiration

Learning a language shouldn't feel like memorizing flashcards. As language learners ourselves, we noticed that many Japanese learning apps focus heavily on vocabulary lists and grammar drills, but they rarely help learners connect the language to their everyday lives. We wanted to build something different—an experience where learning happens naturally while interacting with the real world. That idea became NihonGoAIR. Our vision was simple: Turn the world around you into your Japanese classroom.

By combining Artificial Intelligence, Augmented Reality, and spaced repetition learning, we created an immersive platform where users learn Japanese by exploring their environment, speaking with AI tutors, and practicing vocabulary in real-world contexts.

What it does

NihonGoAIR is an AI-powered Japanese learning platform that makes everyday experiences interactive. 🌏 AR Spatial Learning Simply point your phone at everyday objects. The app recognizes items such as coffee, fruit, or kitchen appliances and instantly overlays their Japanese names, pronunciation, and readings directly into the real world. Instead of memorizing isolated vocabulary, learners associate words with real experiences, improving long-term memory. 🤖 Real-Time AI Voice Tutor Users can have natural conversations with an AI Japanese tutor. The AI: Corrects pronunciation Explains grammar naturally Adjusts conversation difficulty Encourages speaking confidence Provides contextual examples The goal is to simulate talking with a real Japanese teacher anytime. 🍳 Kitchen Mode Cooking becomes a language lesson. Learners follow real recipes while an AI "Sous Chef" teaches: ingredients cooking verbs kitchen vocabulary conversational phrases This transforms everyday cooking into immersive language practice. 📚 Complete JLPT Curriculum NihonGoAIR includes a structured roadmap covering: JLPT N5 JLPT N4 JLPT N3 JLPT N2 JLPT N1 The curriculum contains: 648+ vocabulary words 102+ grammar points interactive mini-games speaking exercises review sessions 🧠 Smart Review System We implemented scientifically proven spaced repetition using: FSRS-5 SM-2 review algorithms This ensures learners review words at the optimal time to maximize long-term retention while reducing unnecessary repetition. 👨‍👩‍👧 Adaptive Learning The interface adapts to different learners: Children Teenagers Adults Lessons become progressively more challenging based on learner performance. How we built it NihonGoAIR combines several modern technologies into one seamless learning experience. Artificial Intelligence AI powers: conversational tutoring pronunciation assessment grammar explanations personalized learning recommendations adaptive lesson generation Augmented Reality AR creates contextual learning by placing Japanese vocabulary directly onto real-world objects. Instead of asking learners to imagine context, we let them experience it. Speech Technology Real-time voice conversations allow learners to practice speaking naturally while receiving immediate feedback. Learning Science We integrated educational research including: spaced repetition contextual learning active recall immersion-based learning gamification to increase learner engagement and retention. User Experience We designed the platform to feel approachable and playful through: friendly mascot characters visual progression maps achievements mini-games colorful interfaces bite-sized daily lessons The goal was to make users want to return every day. Challenges we ran into Building an immersive educational platform came with several challenges. Making AI conversations feel natural Creating conversations that are educational without sounding robotic required careful prompt engineering and iterative testing. Designing meaningful AR interactions We didn't want AR to be a gimmick. Each interaction had to reinforce vocabulary learning and improve memory retention instead of simply displaying labels. Balancing education with fun Too much gamification reduces learning. Too much educational content reduces engagement. Finding the right balance took multiple design iterations. Building for every learner Children, tourists, university students, and JLPT candidates all have different goals. Designing one platform that adapts to each learner was one of our biggest UX challenges. Accomplishments that we're proud of We're proud that NihonGoAIR goes beyond traditional flashcards by creating an immersive learning ecosystem. What we learned

This project reinforced several important lessons. Technology alone doesn't improve education. Great educational experiences happen when technology supports proven learning principles. We also learned: Context improves vocabulary retention. Speaking practice builds confidence faster than passive study. Immediate feedback keeps learners motivated. AR is most effective when it supports real-world interaction. AI can act as a personalized tutor rather than simply answering questions. Perhaps our biggest takeaway was realizing that immersive learning can make language study feel enjoyable instead of intimidating.
