Inspiration
When learning the prompt was regarding healthcare, senior citizens were the first thing to come to mind. All three of us have grandparents struggling with health issues. Personally (Coby), my grandmother has issues with falling and wandering late at night. Like most elders, she wants to be independent and can be stubborn at times. She forgets or refuses to wear emergency alert devices, and hates the idea of a third-party caregiver checking on her daily. A retirement home/community is also not an option for most, as it is costly and takes away their independence. Many families, including mine, are forced to choose between privacy and safety, but what if we didn't have to choose? In my personal experience(Ivan Vega-Everitt) I wish something like this would have come to light sooner. I have a personal vendetta to find a solution to this problem. My grandfather, a part of the fighting texas aggie class of 69’ was diagnosed with parkinsonism. This disease continued to eat at him to the point where he couldn't speak or walk. My grandfather would have trouble going to the restroom, even though he was in the comfort of his own home. If something like Angelus had been implemented in my grandparents' home, my grandmother wouldn’t have to call the fire department every time my grandfather fell. We are here to make a change for the better, and are willing to go above and beyond for those who have served our society in the past. The name Angelus was chosen as it is the latin word for Angel, which resonates with our motive of making the app.
What it does
Our solution utilizes Wi-Fi presence detection. This works by analyzing how wireless signals move through a space and how those signals change when a person is present or moving. AI can interpret these disruptions in the WiFi signal patterns to detect movement, location, and activity. This allows our AI system to identify a person and recognize when someone is walking, resting, or needs assistance. This technology is already being adapted into the security and defense sectors, and we hope to utilize it in healthcare. With an Angelus node, we can detect these home WiFi signals to analyze heartrate, movement and activity. Our AI interface then analyzes the collected data, turning it into a readable report for the app users. This can send important notifications and weekly reports to loved ones who want to stay in the know.
How we built it
We started out with a simple wish of just wanting to make the world a better place, and with that wish an idea came to fruition. This idea started out with us wanting to insure our grandparents well being, and to insure that we wanted to make sure we could always check in on them. We went to figma, started designing the very start of our app, Angelus. Angelus started out very crudely, with a poor UI with unappealing graphics and unfunctional buttons. We smoothed it out, using Gemini to smoothen out what we wanted so we could get a better idea of what we needed and how to accomplish it. As the app came together, we polished up the features that made Angelus a more appealing app, with better color grading, better functionality, and more in depth detail that truly turned Angelus into the in-depth idea that it is today
Challenges we ran into
Learning figma was the largest challenge we faced. All three of us are complete beginners to the program so it was pretty slow getting started. Although designing Angelus was a challenge at first, we started to understand the program a whole lot better and we genuinely feel a whole lot more confident about using Figma. We also ran into the challenge of understanding the technology that could be used to accomplish our goal of providing service to the elderly community. We did research that helped us understand this to a way higher degree.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Building our first website and app is a huge accomplishment for us. We were definitely intimidated at the beginning of this event, however we are now confident in our ability to make a digital idea reality. Our brand building was also a big accomplishment. A ton of thought went into designing our name and logo and we are happy how everything came out. We’ve been through multiple iterations of our name, logo, website, app, and overall concept. We are proud and confident that Angelus Care is a viable solution to a very real problem.
What we learned
We learned Figma, and we learned how to understand the LLM’s that we would use to accomplish this. We learned how to tackle a problem that has not been covered before and how to apply a design process to a situation that is important to us. We understood the importance of using an AI tool to tackle his healthcare challenge and how amazing a tool AI can be. One of the most important things that we learned was how WiFi could be utilized to accomplish the tracking of the resident and how Wifi is the main backbone of Angelus. Privacy and security and the importance of those was also something that we learned more about, and how to make sure that privacy was secured for the user of the app. By creating a good design in the physical aspect we learned that people would feel more secure and safe if the design of the node was more inviting. We learned so much about product design and how to make designing a product aesthetically more appealing to the public.
What's next for Angelus Care
We genuinely believe that Angelus could help others and become something big. We hope to take this to a university fund so we can further our ideas of Angelus Care to help support the public.
