Inspiration
Anecdotal AI was born out of my personal experience with chronic illness. After years of frustration and uncertainty, I realized how difficult it is for people with chronic conditions to find the right support and diagnosis. My own journey inspired me to create a tool that could help others navigate their health more effectively, avoid misdiagnosis, and find actionable insights faster. This app is designed to provide relief and guidance for those struggling with Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS), a silent debilitating condition that is estimated to affect at least 10 million people in the United States alone, and other similar hard-to-diagnose chronic conditions.
What it does
Anecdotal AI offers several tools aimed at improving the health journey for individuals with chronic conditions:
- Progress Tracker: Users can document their symptoms and healing journey, visualizing their progress on a timeline and use AI to analyze their healing journey for helpful patterns and insights.
- Symptom Checker: Allows users to input symptoms, which the AI then analyzes to suggest possible causes.
- Investigate Surrounding: Users can upload images of areas in their home/office that could be harboring the growth of something toxic, and the AI will analyze the images relative to any symptoms they might be experiencing, letting them know if the toxins around them might be a contributing factor and generating reports they can send to their doctor, landlord, or employer - to help fast track a diagnosis or kick start remediation.
- AI-Powered Chat/Voice Interface: Users can ask questions about their symptoms or general health concerns and receive insights.
- Lab Interpretation: Upload lab results to receive an analysis and cross-reference the data with your symptoms, providing actionable reports for personal comprehension or to share with medical professionals.
How we built it
We built Anecdotal AI using Flutter, a framework that allowed us to develop for both Android and iOS. On the backend, we use Firebase. Gemini and Open AI power the AI-driven functionalities. And then there's the star of the show, RevenueCat powering the in-app purchase experience on both the Android and iOS versions of the app. Integrating AI models for symptom checking and lab result interpretation required extensive research into chronic conditions and training data for accuracy.
Challenges we ran into
One major challenge was fine-tuning the AI models to provide meaningful, personalized insights for users. Since chronic illnesses present differently in each individual, creating an adaptable algorithm was a complex task. Another challenge was ensuring the Investigate Home feature accurately analyzed images of home environments and linked them to health symptoms. Additionally, building a user-friendly interface for people who may be overwhelmed by their health challenges was a key focus and an ongoing task.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of creating a platform to help people who feel unheard or misunderstood in their health journey. The Investigate Home feature, which connects environmental factors to health symptoms, is a standout accomplishment. We are also proud of the seamless integration of AI in various aspects of the app, from symptom checking to lab result analysis, all designed to empower users to take control of their health.
What we learned
We learned the power of resilience, determination, and personal conviction while building Anecdotal AI in two weeks (We were a bit late to the party). And how important personal experience is in creating a personalized healthcare solution. Building Anecdotal AI deepened our understanding of chronic illness and the power of AI to analyze patterns with research-based data. We also learned that technology has the potential to bridge gaps in healthcare, helping individuals find answers and relief when traditional methods may fall short.
What's next for Anecdotal AI
Next, Anecdotal AI aims to expand its scope to cover more hard-to-diagnose chronic conditions. We plan to improve the AI’s ability to offer more personalized insights by gathering more data and fine-tuning our models. Another goal is to enhance the Investigate Home feature, offering users more tools to identify environmental factors affecting their health. We’re also focused on building a supportive community within the app, where users can share experiences, advice, and resources, making the healing journey less isolating.
