Inspiration

  • Everyone knows about Freshman 15. As busy college students, it is hard to balance school, extracurriculars, and a balanced diet. So, we wanted to create a app catered towards dining hall users to promote a healthy lifestyle.

What it does

  • Optimizes Your Nutrition Journey: Input your weight, height, and dietary goals (bulking, cutting, maintaining), and unlock a tailored daily meal plan aligned with the current Glasgow menu. Experience precision in personalization for your health and fitness objective.

How we built it

  • We developed an intuitive user interface using HTML, CSS, and Javascript. The backend, crafted with Python and Flask, integrates the GPT-3.5 Turbo API for user information analysis and building the personalized meal plan. Leveraging libraries such as BeautifulSoup (bs4) and Pandas, we seamlessly scrape data from the Glasgow menu website, ensuring a dynamic and robust system.

Challenges we ran into

  • We encountered several challenges during development, including managing response times on the API and navigating the implementation of fetch requests on Flask to seamlessly integrate the backend with our site.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Our project ensures students can lead healthier lives and reach their nutritional goals effortlessly. We're proud to have quickly built a complete project and collaborated effectively, making new connections along the way.

What we learned

  • Firstly, we honed our web development skills by working on full-stack projects. This experience taught us to thrive under pressure within small teams. We gained valuable insights into effective collaboration and learned to manage our time efficiently.

What's next for HighlanderHealth.com

We aim to extend and enhance our project well beyond the hackathon. Our immediate goals involve improving result accuracy and speed, refining the user interface for a more appealing and user-friendly experience. Looking ahead, we plan to incorporate Lothian and expand into more campuses, ensuring broader access for more students.
