Inspiration
Two of us in the team are in accomodation with shared rooms and therefore were assigned a roommate before arriving! We felt the allocation of roommate pairs could have been more technical and we wanted to make that change.
What it does
The program matches up roommates based on a number of compatibility factors such as sleep times, tidiness, interests and more. This is done through a website form, integrated database and backend algorithm.
How we built it
One of us worked on the website, another on the database and two on the backend algorithms to come together and form the best program ever!
Challenges we ran into
Our first hurdle was that we had initially planned on using the Hungarian Algorithm to match students up but realised after a few hours that this would not work. Luckily we found a suitable replacement (big up the Blossom algorithm).
The database was a challenge but using the power of teamwork we achieved great things. We also struggled to connect to the database for many hours, until discovering the EduRoam WiFi was the culprit and had blocked the connection.
Our project also completely broke half an hour before submission!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Thomas — Progressively improving the program's efficiency
Cameron — Proud of the design (much better than the first draft) and integrating google gemini in the last half an hour
Gavin — Learning two new frameworks and a new language!
Olly — Proud that I did not destroy everything with git
What we learned
Olly and Thomas learnt to use git much more confidently whilst Cameron and Gavin built on their previous knowledge which will serve them well for their future projects.
