Inspiration

The idea for An Ocean Away was first sparked by the phrase "Fresh off the Boat," a phrase often historically used to describe Chinese (Canto) Immigrants to the US. From that we decided to tell a story of a mother, looking for a better life but who also holds worries about the journey due to the climate of the US at the time (1900s).

What it does

Through this 2d narrative focused game, you explore the boat as Tianyun Zhang, who is traveling with her young son she nicknamed Guai Guai. As you meet other passengers on the boat through dialogue, you are faced with puzzles focused on Tianyun Zhang's fears and dreams.

How we built it

An Ocean Away was programmed in C# using Unity. We used Ink to format our dialogue.

Challenges we ran into

Some technical challenges we ran into were bumps along the way when it came to pathfinding for our player sprite and problems generalizing our puzzle minigame photos to be spliced.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the story we are presenting and what we were able to accomplish in this time.

What we learned

We learned a lot about the history of the time period, puzzle solving, pathfinding, and camera mechanics within Unity.

What's next for An Ocean Away

An Ocean Away could use some refinement, although all our major coding is done there are some tweaks and adjustments that would really bring An Ocean Away to its full potential such as cleaner cutscene transitions and more artwork!
