Inspiration
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the most urgent threats to modern medicine. Pharmaceutical companies invest billions of dollars and over a decade to develop new antibiotics, yet promising candidates often fail due to unexpected resistance patterns.
We were inspired to create a solution that empowers pharma teams with proactive, actionable insights, rather than waiting for static, delayed reports from WHO, CDC, or other sources.
Our goal: detect resistance threats early and guide decision-making to protect drug pipelines and clinical trials.
What it does
AMR Sentinel is a Tableau Next-powered platform that continuously monitors antimicrobial resistance trends and provides prescriptive insights.
- Detects emerging threats in real time using time-series and geospatial analyses
- Highlights high-risk pathogens, regions, and drug classes in intuitive dashboards
- Provides actionable recommendations for pharma teams—such as adjusting trial site strategies or prioritizing backup compounds—directly within the dashboards
It transforms raw phenotypic surveillance data into clear, decision-ready intelligence for R&D, clinical, and stewardship teams.
How we built it
Data Modeling
- Created a synthetic dataset (10,000–50,000 records) with Region, Clinical Trial Site, Pathogen, Drug Class, Resistance %, and Pipeline Impact Score
- Published it as a trusted Tableau Next data source optimized for trend and anomaly detection
Proactive Detection (Inspector)
- Configured time-series and geospatial analyses to flag sudden spikes and unusual resistance trends
- Example: rapid carbapenem resistance growth near Phase III trial sites
Prescriptive Recommendations (Concierge + Optional Einstein Discovery)
- Embedded natural-language insights in dashboards to guide actionable decisions
Visualization
- Built executive-ready dashboards with heatmaps, trend lines, and anomaly markers
- Ensured all insights are interpretable at a glance, balancing detail and clarity
Challenges we ran into
- Creating realistic synthetic data that mimicked real-world resistance trends
- Translating complex biological and clinical patterns into clear, actionable recommendations
- Dashboard clarity: balancing comprehensive insights with user-friendly visuals
- Integrating detection, trends, and prescriptive recommendations in a single dashboard
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Delivered a fully functional, executive-ready dashboard combining detection, trends, and recommendations
- Demonstrated true agentic analytics within Tableau Next—going from detection to action without external tools
- Created a hackathon-ready proof-of-concept extensible to real-world datasets
- Showcased high-impact visual storytelling, including geospatial heatmaps and anomaly trends
What we learned
- Tableau Next Inspector and Concierge are powerful for detecting and acting on emerging trends
- Intuitive dashboards significantly increase adoption and decision-making speed
- Structured, realistic data is essential for trustworthy analytics—even when synthetic
- Analytics can be prescriptive, not just descriptive, directly influencing business and clinical decisions
What's next for AMR Sentinel
- Integrate real-world surveillance data from public and partner sources for improved accuracy
- Enhance recommendations with predictive modeling and advanced Einstein Discovery insights
- Expand dashboards to include scenario simulations and “what-if” analyses for trial planning
- Explore cross-team workflow automation to reduce response time during resistance spikes
