Standardized tests like the ACT are supposed to measure potential but in practice, they often
measure access. Private tutors cost $80–$150 an hour. Prep courses run hundreds of dollars. Students from wealthier backgrounds show up on test day having had months of personalized coaching; students
who couldn't afford that show up having done their best with a borrowed prep book.

What makes this even more urgent right now is that colleges are reinstating test-required admissions after years of test-optional policies during COVID. That means ACT and SAT scores are back on the table as gatekeepers to higher education and the prep gap is back with them.

I built Amplius because I don't think a student's score should be limited by their family's income. Every student deserves to know exactly where they stand, exactly what to work on, and exactly how to get better not just the ones who can afford someone to tell them.
