Inspiration

Having a neurodivergent brain is often described as having a Ferrari engine but with bicycle brakes. Traditional productivity apps are filled with rigid lists, blaring alarms, and high-friction setups that instantly trigger task paralysis. I wanted to build a workspace that didn't feel like a sterile medical tool or an intimidating command center. The inspiration for Ampflow was to create a digital sanctuary—a low-friction, highly aesthetic environment that actively helps manage task initiation, filters out distractions, and gently trains executive function.

What it does

Ampflow is a zero-friction productivity suite designed specifically for ADHD and neurodivergent focus. It breaks down the barriers to getting work done through three core pillars:

  • Adaptive Flow Timer: A Pomodoro system featuring an integrated global audio engine. Users can layer deep brown noise or looping ambient tracks to mask distractions, complete with soft, acoustic "nudges" instead of jarring, stress-inducing alarms.
  • Global Scratchpad: An instant-capture inbox triggered globally by Ctrl + Shift + Space. It allows users to instantly dump intrusive thoughts, actionable to-dos, or timed reminders without ever leaving their current screen or breaking their coding flow.
  • Cognitive Training Hub: A suite of evidence-based interactive modules (like the Go/No-Go Impulse Trainer and Stroop Attention Filter) designed as aesthetic "digital fidgets." These strengthen working memory and response inhibition without the pressure of traditional gaming fail-states.

How we built it

I built Ampflow as a lightning-fast client-side application using React and Vite.

  • UI & Aesthetics: The visual identity relies heavily on Tailwind CSS to create a calming, glassmorphic environment using soft indigo and lilac gradients that don't overstimulate the eyes.
  • Interactions: I implemented Framer Motion to provide satisfying, tactile micro-animations. Giving UI elements a feeling of physical weight and smooth elasticity acts as an excellent visual anchor for a wandering mind.
  • Architecture: To keep user friction at absolute zero, all data—including scratchpad entries, active reminders, and cognitive training stats—is handled via custom state management and persisted instantly to the browser's localStorage.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest technical hurdles was managing the global state for the audio engine and the Scratchpad hotkey listener. Ensuring that the quick-capture modal could open instantly over any component without hijacking standard browser inputs or interrupting the looping audio required careful useEffect management. Additionally, designing the cognitive games was a tough balancing act: I had to translate clinical neuroscience paradigms (like the N-Back matrix) into engaging UI components that improved executive function without inducing performance anxiety.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am incredibly proud of the seamless audio integration. Creating a timer that automatically ducks the volume of the background brown noise to play a gentle 5-second completion chime sounds like a small detail, but it fundamentally changes the emotional feel of the application. It actively prevents the cortisol spikes caused by standard alarms and makes starting the next task significantly easier.

What we learned

Building Ampflow was a deep dive into the cognitive mechanics of focus. I learned exactly how working memory deficits operate, why specific audio frequencies act as effective auditory masking, and how software can programmatically train inhibitory control. On the technical side, I massively leveled up my ability to orchestrate complex global states in React and build buttery-smooth physics animations with Framer Motion.

What's next for Ampflow

Because Ampflow currently relies entirely on client-side storage for a zero-setup experience, the next major milestone is implementing optional cloud synchronization. I plan to integrate a backend database (likely utilizing a Supabase architecture) to handle secure, cross-device syncing for the Scratchpad and long-term data visualization for the cognitive training streaks. I also plan to expand the library of interactive "digital fidgets" to help users maintain a steady physical rhythm during long study sessions.
