Inspiration
In today’s fast-paced digital world, genuine connection often gets lost in the noise. We wanted to build something that brings intentionality and emotional depth back to how people interact online. Amouré was inspired by the idea of creating a space where users can express feelings, share their emotional state, and engage in meaningful reflections—with themselves or someone they care about.
What it does
Inclusive Profile Creation: Express your authentic self with options for diverse gender identities, sexual orientations, and pronouns Smart Matching: Find connections based on shared interests and compatibility Secure Messaging: Communicate safely with privacy controls and reporting features Safety First: Robust safety features including user verification and safety resources Accessibility: Designed with accessibility in mind, following WCAG guidelines
How we built it
We used:
- Frontend: React.js with Material UI for a modern, responsive design.
- Authentication: Firebase Authentication with Google Sign-In for easy onboarding.
- Backend & Database: Firebase Firestore for real-time storage and syncing of aura data and user notes.
- Hosting: Vercel for seamless deployment and CI/CD integration. The app was designed with simplicity and emotional expression in mind—minimalist UI, calming colors, and smooth interactions.
Challenges we ran into
- Crafting a UI that balances emotional warmth with clarity was tougher than expected.
- Managing real-time updates and syncing aura logs without performance issues.
- Handling authentication and user data securely while keeping the onboarding flow smooth.
- Finding the right tone for a product centered around emotional well-being—neither too clinical nor overly sentimental.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Built a full-stack application with real-time updates and authentication in just a few days. Designed an emotionally engaging user experience that resonates with Gen Z users. Implemented aura visualization that feels intuitive and encourages self-reflection. Deployed a stable version of the app that users can immediately interact with.
What we learned
The importance of user empathy when building mental wellness or emotional apps. How to use Firebase effectively for auth and database operations. Better state management in React for handling dynamic user interactions. The value of feedback loops in emotional journaling and how design can encourage that.
