Healthcare AI interoperability

AminoGap AI was designed as an interoperable healthcare nutrition agent built within Prompt Opinion’s A2A ecosystem.

The project explores how AI agents can safely interpret dietary patterns inside healthcare-oriented workflows while remaining compatible with:

  • FHIR patient context
  • multi-agent environments
  • healthcare-safe prompting
  • structured interoperability standards

The system is designed as a modular healthcare AI agent that can participate in broader wellness and clinical workflows.

Inspiration

Many people believe that eating “enough protein” automatically means their amino acid intake is balanced. In reality, protein quantity and amino acid quality are not always the same.

AminoGap AI was created to explore a simple but important healthcare question:

Can AI help identify possible essential amino acid gaps from dietary patterns before nutritional imbalance becomes clinically significant?

The goal is to help users better understand how food choices influence essential amino acid balance, protein quality, and overall dietary adequacy.

Why amino acid balance matters

Essential amino acids work together as a coordinated biological system.

Even when total protein intake appears “adequate,” the body may still struggle to efficiently support important physiological processes if one or more essential amino acids are consistently low.

Protein synthesis depends on amino acid availability as a complete set. When one essential amino acid becomes limiting, the body’s ability to fully utilise other amino acids may also decrease.

This may potentially affect:

  • muscle maintenance
  • tissue repair
  • immune system function
  • enzyme production
  • neurotransmitter synthesis
  • hormone production
  • recovery and metabolism

For example:

  • leucine plays an important role in muscle protein synthesis
  • methionine contributes to methylation and sulfur metabolism
  • tryptophan is involved in serotonin production

The project explores these relationships in an educational and nutrition-focused way.

Possible signs associated with chronically poor protein quality or inadequate amino acid intake may include:

  • fatigue
  • reduced recovery
  • low appetite
  • muscle weakness
  • poor exercise recovery
  • hair or skin changes
  • reduced dietary resilience

What the project does

AminoGap AI analyses dietary patterns and estimates possible limiting essential amino acids based on food intake descriptions.

The agent:

  • interprets food logs
  • estimates amino acid adequacy
  • identifies potentially limiting amino acids
  • explains protein quality differences
  • generates recommendations
  • provides an Amino Acid Balance Score

How it works

The workflow is intentionally lightweight, educational, and healthcare-compatible:

  1. User enters a dietary pattern or food log
  2. AI converts foods into structured nutrition concepts
  3. Foods are matched against amino acid knowledge
  4. The system estimates possible limiting amino acids
  5. Educational nutrition explanations are generated
  6. Food-first recommendations are suggested

The project was implemented directly within the Prompt Opinion platform using:

  • A2A-compatible agent configuration
  • FHIR patient context support
  • vector knowledge grounding
  • structured healthcare-oriented prompting
  • clinically safe response guardrails

The architecture was intentionally designed to align with emerging healthcare AI interoperability standards.

Challenges

One of the biggest challenges was balancing scientific accuracy, healthcare-safe language, and understandable explanations for non-experts. Amino acid intake estimation is probabilistic and cannot replace laboratory-confirmed nutritional assessment.

An additional challenge involved designing the agent in a way that remains interoperable inside a broader healthcare AI ecosystem while maintaining clear safety boundaries.

The project also demonstrated how AI can be used to explain complex nutrition concepts in a more understandable and patient-friendly way.

Additionally, building inside an interoperable healthcare AI framework showed how future healthcare agents may collaborate across systems using shared standards like FHIR, A2A communication and structured healthcare context propagation.

Future improvements

Planned future development includes:

  • full integration with large-scale food composition databases
  • amino acid intake visualisation dashboards
  • longitudinal nutrition tracking over time
  • mobile application development
  • expanded food recognition and meal interpretation

The long-term vision for AminoGap AI is to create an accessible healthcare nutrition intelligence platform that helps people better understand protein quality and essential amino acid balance in everyday diets.
