Amethyst Arena: It's Just Tag...
Inspiration
The inspiration for Amethyst Arena began with the creation of a crystal model. This single model sparked the idea of designing an entire immersive game world inside a vast amethyst geode. I wanted to push the boundaries of creativity within Horizon Worlds by introducing a fresh game mechanic: a high-energy, one-on-one "Tag" battle. This concept aimed to offer a unique and exhilarating experience unlike anything else in the platform.
What it does
Amethyst Arena is a fast-paced multiplayer game set within a glowing geode landscape. It features one-on-one "Tag" battles with 20-second speed rounds, power-ups, and mobile-optimized gameplay. The game seamlessly supports both VR and mobile players, offering an equal playing field with intuitive camera controls and responsive UI. Players engage in quick, energetic matches that test reflexes and strategy in a vibrant, immersive arena.
How we built it
The development process began with modeling custom 3D assets, which were then imported into a desktop editor. From there, we integrated AI-powered features and tools to enhance the environment and streamline development. I used TypeScript extensively to manage game logic and UI elements. Particular attention was paid to mobile optimization: proximity-based mechanics replaced traditional collision detection to improve performance and connectivity. We also designed a user-friendly mobile interface for smoother control and accessibility.
Challenges we ran into
A key challenge was optimizing performance across various platforms. Ensuring the game ran smoothly on mobile devices without compromising the experience for VR users required a custom approach. Collision detection issues and input inconsistencies had to be solved by developing a unique proximity-based system. Additionally, importing and integrating custom 3D models introduced technical complexities that demanded a deep dive into asset management and editor tooling.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud to have built a fully functional, visually striking game environment that performs well on both mobile and VR. The creative design of the amethyst geode, the smooth gameplay experience, and the innovative "Tag" battle mechanic all stand out as major achievements. Successfully balancing gameplay between platforms while maintaining a fast-paced, enjoyable experience was a major technical and design win.
What we learned
This project significantly expanded my knowledge of 3D modeling, game mechanics, and cross-platform design. I gained hands-on experience with asset integration, TypeScript development, and user interface optimization. I also learned how to troubleshoot performance bottlenecks and improve latency across devices with different hardware limitations.
What's next for Amethyst Arena
Looking ahead, I plan to introduce single-player game modes, new power-ups, and expand the environment within the geode theme. I also want to continue improving the mobile user experience and explore additional AI tools to further enhance gameplay and development efficiency. Iām excited to continue evolving Amethyst Arena and sharing it with the growing Horizon Worlds community.
