Inspiration

Every year, millions of tons of edible fruits and vegetables are discarded simply because they can no longer be sold at their original market price. Farmers and produce sellers often struggle to determine the right selling price as product quality naturally declines over time.

At the same time, food insecurity continues to affect many communities, creating a paradox where food is wasted while people still lack affordable access to fresh produce.

We asked ourselves a simple question:

What if AI could help every harvest find its best purpose instead of becoming waste?

That idea inspired us to build Amerta, an AI-powered marketplace that helps sellers maximize the value of agricultural products throughout their entire lifecycle while reducing food waste through intelligent pricing and circular distribution.

What it does

Amerta is an AI-powered marketplace designed for agricultural products with dynamic quality assessment and sustainable distribution.

🤖 AI Quality Analysis

Sellers upload or capture a photo of their produce, and AI analyzes:

  • Freshness level
  • Remaining shelf life
  • Product quality
  • AI confidence score
  • Recommended selling price

📈 Dynamic Pricing

Instead of fixed pricing, Amerta recommends prices based on current product quality.

Products are classified into four quality levels:

  • 🟢 Fresh
  • 🟡 Good
  • 🟠 Consume Soon
  • 🔴 Bad

As freshness decreases, the recommended selling price adjusts accordingly to encourage sales before products become waste.

👨‍🌾 Seller Dashboard

Sellers can:

  • Analyze products using AI
  • Publish AI-analyzed products
  • Manage inventory
  • Edit selling prices after publishing
  • Monitor product quality

🛒 Buyer Marketplace

Buyers can:

  • Browse nearby products
  • View detailed quality information
  • See freshness indicators
  • Understand remaining shelf life
  • Compare prices transparently

♻ Circular Economy

Not every product ends its journey on a dining table.

When produce is no longer suitable for direct consumption, Amerta redirects it toward alternative partners such as:

  • Organic compost producers
  • Animal feed manufacturers
  • Organic fertilizer producers
  • Agricultural processing industries
  • Biomass and bioenergy initiatives

This ensures that every harvest continues creating value instead of becoming landfill waste.

How we built it

The frontend was built using React, TypeScript, Vite, and Tailwind CSS v4, providing a modern and responsive user experience.

The interface and design system were created in Figma, while rapid UI prototyping and code generation were accelerated using Figma Make.

Animations and interactions were implemented using Motion, while Lucide React provides a clean and consistent icon system.

Our AI workflow is designed around computer vision concepts to estimate product quality from images and generate intelligent pricing recommendations.

Current technology stack includes:

  • React
  • TypeScript
  • Vite
  • Tailwind CSS v4
  • Motion
  • Lucide React
  • Figma Make
  • FastAPI
  • Python
  • PostgreSQL

- Docker

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was designing an experience where AI supports users without replacing their decision-making.

Initially, AI automatically generated all pricing information, but we realized sellers should always remain in control of their products.

We redesigned the workflow so that:

  • AI provides recommendations.
  • Sellers publish products manually.
  • Sellers can adjust prices after publishing.
  • Buyers always see transparent quality information.

Another challenge was balancing sustainability with usability.

Instead of making the application feel like an AI tool, we redesigned the interface into a cleaner marketplace experience that feels familiar while keeping AI quietly working in the background.

Finally, designing a complete circular economy flow required us to think beyond traditional marketplaces by considering what happens after produce is no longer suitable for direct consumption.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud that Amerta is more than just an AI marketplace.

Some of our favorite achievements include:

  • Building an AI-assisted quality analysis workflow.
  • Implementing dynamic pricing recommendations.
  • Creating transparent product detail pages for both sellers and buyers.
  • Designing different experiences for sellers and buyers while maintaining a consistent design system.
  • Introducing a circular economy concept where unsold produce can still generate value through compost, fertilizer, biomass, and animal feed.

Rather than simply helping products get sold, Amerta helps ensure every harvest has a meaningful destination.

What we learned

Throughout this project, we learned that solving food waste requires much more than accurate AI predictions.

Technology alone is not enough.

Good UX is equally important because sellers need to trust AI recommendations while still feeling in control of their business decisions.

We also learned how important transparency is for buyers.

Showing freshness levels, shelf life, quality indicators, and pricing recommendations builds confidence and encourages more sustainable purchasing decisions.

Perhaps our biggest takeaway was realizing that sustainability isn't only about reducing waste—it's about designing systems where waste no longer exists because every product has another opportunity to create value.

What's next for Amerta

We're excited to continue developing Amerta into a complete sustainable agriculture ecosystem.

Our roadmap includes:

  • 🤖 Real AI computer vision model trained on agricultural datasets.
  • 📷 Automatic freshness detection from camera input.
  • 📍 Location-based marketplace recommendations.
  • 🚚 Delivery partner integration.
  • 📊 Inventory forecasting powered by AI.
  • 🌾 Farmer cooperative integration.
  • ♻ Dedicated marketplace for compost, biomass, and agricultural processing industries.
  • 🌍 Carbon footprint analytics to measure environmental impact.
  • 📈 AI-powered demand forecasting and pricing optimization.

Our long-term vision is simple:

Every harvest deserves a second chance.

Whether it's served on someone's table, transformed into compost, converted into renewable energy, or reused for agriculture, we believe no agricultural product should end its journey as unnecessary waste.
