Inspiration

The brands of the current major US political parties, the Republican Party and the Democratic Party, are both toxic among large fractions of the population, and are currently synonymous with gridlock, culture wars, and letting our problems worsen and fester as we fight amongst ourselves. The US is, however, currently very strong at AI technology, so it seems like a very logical thing to do to use our strengths to address our weaknesses.

What it does

A serious effort at launching a new political party, with an innovative feature. Whether or not it takes off, I strongly believe that AI is here to stay in the political realm, and in the future, every political party and politician will use AI technology to help get elected and govern.

How we built it

The platform was generated using Character.AI and edited using GPT-3. The policy positions are all generated using Character.AI. The logo was designed with the help of DALL-E 2 and the Twitter cover photo was generated using BlueWillow.

Challenges we ran into

Many people I’ve talked to, including friends and family, are very skeptical of the ideas of starting a new political party and of using AI to pick policy positions. Additionally, many people have strong emotional attachments to an existing political party and/or are afraid of what their peers and/or employer will think of them if they express support for a new one.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

As far as I’m aware, using AI to generate a political party platform is an original idea, and even though many people I’ve talked to are skeptical of the idea, they are not able to offer convincing arguments for why every political party won’t be doing this in the future.

What we learned

I think many people like to blame politicians for all of our problems, and feel like if they try to stay uninvolved and avoid offering opinions on anything, then they avoid any responsibility for what happens. The exercise of trying to create a political party makes me feel more sympathetic to the problems they face of taking responsibility for the challenges of making decisions and governing in response to the changing and contradictory demands placed upon them by voters.

What's next for American Citizens Party

I’m hoping to be rapidly judge how much support there is for this idea and what the future of the party will be: will it be remembered as a thought experiment, a footnote in history books, or something that actually achieves a level of mainstream support?
