Inspiration
For over a decade we have planned, developed, and supported custom database application development in the web 2.0 space for clients both large and small. During this time we have witnessed the shortcomings of centralized, permissioned databases. Our clients have faced countless issues with migration and recovery costs, ownership, data agility, and security vulnerabilities.
The speed of Solana and the permanence of Arweave is an ideal combination to address these weaknesses while also providing an accessible path for the B2B space that has been slow to adopt decentralized solutions.
From the Web 2.0 space we were inspired by platforms like Workato and MuleSoft that allow business to easily leverage data across multiple platforms. By removing data from siloed environments, we will be able to eventually use AMBRR to act as both permanent data storage and an agile, buildable platform that can be used to easily port data into web services needed for the user’s business.
What it does
AMBRR is an interface that gives you the ability to create and manage data backup in a quick and efficient manner. Simply connect with your wallet, fill out the backup request form, and submit the request. AMBBR provides simplified access for the end user while also mitigating risk by diversifying long term data storage.
Once set up, data backups managed through the AMBRR interface allow for complete data mobility. Users will be able to lessen the reliance on third parties, more easily create robust data sets, and speed through data migrations needed for businesses running multiple SaaS tools.
How we built it
Our platform is built using Vue.js, Python, and Fast API.
When a user creates a backup request or "script" in AMBRR we generate an NFT on the Solana blockchain to represent that script and tag it with the NFT's ID on our servers.
All subsequent data backup files or "runs" under that "script" are then stored on the Arweave blockchain and are tagged with the "script" NFT ID to cross reference them.
This allows users, from within or outside of our platform, to have unlimited access to their data whenever they need it since all data backups are associated with NFTs stored in their Solana wallet.
Currently we use a very simple base64 encryption and decryption method when storing and retrieving data from the Arweave blockchain. Soon, each account on our system will have its own unique encryption mechanism so only users who own the data can see the true data.
In the near future, this full process will be automated and based on the frequency chosen by the end users when creating the initial backup request. For the current demo, we have the frequency turned off but each backup request that is created can be manually triggered from the system.
Challenges we ran into
Team AMBRR has been exploring different ideas on building with blockchain tech and the Ignition Hackathon provided the catalyst to bring our ideas to life. Our primary challenge was deciding which idea to develop! As seasoned developers who have worked with Clients for years, we knew we wanted to solve a problem we see every day. Since this was our first time building on a blockchain we anticipated a steep learning curve. However, we have been able to speed development due to the robust documentation made available by the Solana & Arweave ecosystems.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The Hackathon was a perfect opportunity to bring AMBRR to life. We are proud of the whole team involved for contributing during the short time frame. It took teamwork and commitment from everyone included to ensure we achieved our vision before the deadline.
We’re proud to bring a solution to the B2B space that bridges the gap between traditional software storage solutions and web 3.0 capabilities. B2B tech is under indexing in blockchain solutions that solve tangible issues. AMBRR provides a viable pathway for businesses to solve data storage issues in the long term and can provide a platform to educate and build trust in the space.
What we learned
Throughout this process, we have learned that not all blockchains are created equal. The speed of Solana and the permanence of Arweave have opened our eyes to what’s possible.
Building AMBRR has also shown what a welcoming and supportive community there is around the Solana ecosystem. Between Twitter, Telegram and Discord it was easy to find answers and see how others were problem solving for issues they are seeing.
What's next for AMBRR
We’re just getting started! We’re a seed stage venture that is moving rapidly to not only execute on our initial thesis but also refine our vision as we learn more.
AMBRR is currently a data backup solution that enables true data sovereignty, but in the future we will be building on top of this foundation. Our goal is to provide customers with a user-friendly platform to harness their data for use in building and creating tangible solutions that provide real value for their businesses.
The Hackathon has been the catalyst for getting AMBRR off the ground. While continuing to develop the platform we will also be progressing on our GTM strategy to bring on users.
