Inspiration
We wanted to create something that would allow a user to make purchases with peace of mind that they will be sustainable. We then thought to emulate the "honey" chrome extension but put a sustainable twist on it
What it does
When opening a product page on Amazon, Amazon Eco-friend automatically scrapes the site to find more eco-friendly alternatives of the product you are currently looking for. Once it has found products it will get the image, name and price of the product, along with a link to the recommended product.
How we built it
We built this project using a HTML, JavaScript, and CSS frontend with a Python backend. The UI and interactivity of the extension were created with vanilla HTML/CSS and JavaScript and was linked to our Flask backend to receive data scraped from the site using Selenium.
Challenges we ran into
One challenge that we encountered was getting the scraper to scrape the right word and get the right data. Part of this struggle came from needing to work around the web scraping protections on Amazon, as the site would sometimes block attempts to access and scrape data.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
we are very proud that we were able to link the scraper with the chrome extension UI that we made as we thought this would be a challenge when making the project
What we learned
Through this project we learned how to make a full-stack application in the form of a Chrome extension. We also learned how to create an integrated frontend and backend with Flask and other technologies.
What's next for Amazon Eco-Friend
In our opinion, Amazon Eco-Friend could be expanded into not just a chrome extension but also an amazon site that could be used only to purchase eco friendly amazon products.
