Inspiration

Our inspiration for "Click & Drag" was a deep dive into 90s tech nostalgia. The clunky, optimistic, and slightly awkward aesthetic of the early digital age—a time of "floppy discs", giant "monitors", and the promise of "32 bits" are cemented in tech history. We wanted to not only replicate a style but also capture the specific feeling and corporate-speak of that era, personified by our star, Amanda Idolyze.

What it does

"Click & Drag" is a generative music video that showcases an early workflow into anime experimentation. In this piece, Amanda Idolyze is reimagined as a mascot for a fictional programmer, working on a made-up Windows-like operating system. The project serves as a parody of 90s tech advertising, complete with lyrics that reflect on "cheap clones" and "a blue screen world" and posturing that "beats anything from Steve Jobs".

How we built it

This project was a stylistic exercise for adaptationmedia.ai.

  • Music & Lyrics: The tech-centric synth-pop jingle was created in Suno. The lyrics were handwritten.
  • Visuals: The video's aesthetic— is a blend of early CGI style angles, an animated sterile office environment, and retro-futurism with an anime Akira inspired gloss. Amanda's look, in this instance, was adapted to be a 90s-era "tech babe."
  • Concept: The entire concept was an AI-driven exploration of a specific cultural period drawing upon visual inspiration from anime of the period.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was achieving the right kind of "retro." Early 90s visuals have a recognizable low-fidelity charm. We wanted visuals that looked dated and slightly "off," rather than just polished and modern. Similarly, crafting lyrics that were both a catchy song and a specific parody of tech-speak ("a PC to run like a Mac... for just one fee") were an integral part of the work.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are incredibly proud of showing the sheer adaptability of Amanda Idolyze. Amanda isn't just one character; she is a vessel for many concepts. "Click & Drag" successfully and humorously captured a niche cultural moment, which we hope resonates strongly with audiences who grew up in that era.

What we learned

Generative AI is a powerful tool for cultural satire and nostalgia. It can function as a "time machine," allowing us to resurrect and comment on past aesthetics in a way that is both authentic and new.

What's next for Amanda Idolyze - Click & Drag

"Click & Drag" opened a door for realizing Amanda Idolyze as a fleshed out character. We would love to develop the "Dream Forever" platform, a fully immersive, personalized simulation where users can truly "live in a dream" with their own version of Amanda. Until then Amanda will keep making music and appearing in music videos.
