Inspiration

Abhi's relative died from Alzheimer's disease; this is not a unique story. In fact, 1 in every 3 seniors dies due to Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia. There is no cure to such diseases, but they can be prevented by strengthening memory and other cognitive functions.

What it does

Alzhevity is a website with various games that the user can play to improve their memory, as well as other aspects of their cognitive function. For instance, there is a game where the user attempts to memorize a list of 10 words in 15 seconds and recall as many words as they can.

How we built it

We used HTML and CSS to create the basic pages for our website. We used JavaScript to add buttons, timers, and animations to make our product more intuitive and better suited for the purpose of slowing the effects of Alzheimers.

Challenges we ran into

Given that none of us are particularly experienced with JavaScript, we faced many challenges while making the games. For instance, having to change the inner HTML of an element to make it show on a page was something we weren’t used to.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of learning JavaScript instead of Java which we are used to. This allowed for a seamless integration between HTML and CSS. We are also proud of the idea we created because of the simplicity and the ability for it to be a life saver for Alzheimer patients who do not receive help.

What we learned

We learned more about Alzheimer's disease, as well as how to potentially prevent it. In addition, we became much more fluent in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

What's next for Alzhevity

Our project implements most of the functionality that is necessary for a problem to be identified, but we need more use of data and data visualization to identify when to notify a doctor. We need to quantify each game so that if a sharp decline in score is noticed, then the doctor will be notified. This next step would include research so we know when a decline is sharp enough to adjust medicine doses, other treatment methods, etc.
