About AlumniConnect

Inspiration

Students often struggle to find reliable career guidance, industry insights, and job opportunities when preparing for their professional careers. Although colleges have large alumni networks, students may not have an easy way to connect with alumni working in different companies and industries. This inspired us to build AlumniConnect, a dedicated networking platform that bridges the gap between students and alumni.

Our goal was to create a centralized platform where students could learn from alumni experiences, explore career opportunities, and build meaningful professional connections.

How We Built It

We developed AlumniConnect using the MERN stack, with React.js for the frontend, Node.js and Express.js for the backend, and MongoDB for database management.

The platform provides separate roles for students and alumni, with role-based access control to ensure that users can access the features relevant to their roles. Alumni can share job opportunities, while students can explore available openings and connect with alumni through a secure, request-based one-to-one messaging system.

We also implemented authentication, authorization, and RESTful APIs to manage user information, job postings, and communication between users.

Challenges We Faced

One of our main challenges was implementing role-based access control so that students and alumni had the appropriate permissions. We also had to manage communication requests carefully to ensure that one-to-one conversations could be initiated through a controlled process.

Integrating the frontend with backend APIs and maintaining consistent data handling across the application required careful development and testing. These challenges helped us understand the importance of designing secure, organized, and maintainable web applications.

What We Learned

Through this project, we gained practical experience in full-stack web development, REST API integration, database management, authentication, and authorization. We also learned how to structure an application around different user roles and translate a real-world problem into a functional software solution.

Beyond the technical aspects, this project helped us understand how technology can make existing college alumni networks more accessible and useful for career development.

Our Vision

With AlumniConnect, we aim to make alumni networking more accessible, organized, and meaningful by creating a shared space where students can gain industry knowledge, discover opportunities, and build professional relationships with graduates who have already entered the workforce.
